Once I did the tappets on my MK1 Cortina, a job I had been doing for years on all cars. So keen was I to hear it run, I started the car.Reminds me of a time me and a mate were riding to Ireland. He had changed to the front pads the day before and they were making a terrible din whenever he applied the brakes. While waiting for the ferry I took a closer look, he'd fitted them inside out (or back to front), metal to metal. Fixed that on the quayside
Then the ring spanner that I had left on the end of the crank span the bolt out and shot up the back of the rad puncturing the header tank.
Boy did I swear! And ignominiously I had to borrow my brother's car to take the rad for repair.
So far, crossed fingers, that is the worse mistake I have made, I think.
but I'll have to give it some thought!
