Persil was the very first, 1907 invented by the Germans. Tide was an early one, '46 and believe it or not Dreft came out very early on, '33, wasn't good for really dirty clothes! Omo came out in '63.
I do remember all of those but Dreft was not a popular choice for a highly industrial area of the country!

We had an ADA when I was a kid washer / wringer

DAZ was the one with little blue speckles that made your White's BRIGHT! (allegedly).
A packet of OMO was to be put in the lady of the houses window to indicate "Old Man's Out" so her gentlemen callers could pop in for a bit. ;)

I've never heard that but then I cannot imagine that my mother would have ever consider telling it to me. :D :D :D

My "Nan" (who we went and lived with after my Mum topped herself) had an old copper boiler for washing clothes/sheets etc. and a big old mangle for squeezing the water out of the clothes and the sheets etc. Really big old thing with a great big heavy winding wheel and huge wooden rollers (the mangle that is, not my Nan). :)

That's exactly what we had. The copper boiler was for washing the bed linens and towels in. There was a coal fire kept underneath it to keep the water boiling. Everything else was done in the dolly tub using the water from the boiler after it had done its turn in there. The mangle really was a heavy weight but we were not allowed to go near it 'cos we might trap our fingers.

Yup! Nan wouldn't let me "feed" the mangle, but I was allowed to turn the handle that drove the rollers. :D
