I taught both my kids and two grandchildren to drive, all passed first time.Back home on me island after a night in the big smoke
Took daughter to look at her first car and drove it home this afternoon.
Now the fun starts taking her out driving
I’ll be needing something for me nerves
Started by making them start off and stop time after time until they could do a wheelspin start and emergency stop on demand without even thinking about it.
Then somewhere quiet to drive in figure of eights, reverse in figure of eights, reverse in a straight line faster than walking pace etc.
Not been out on the road yet !!
Once they could handle the car and got used to how wide it was and how the brakes work, how much input to give the steering for a given result they were ready for the road.
You can't expect someone to concentrate on driving a car when they are still thinking about steering, braking , indicating etc, once they can steer, stop and start naturally then they can go out in traffic and just have to worry about signs, road positioning etc.
Lost count of the number of driving instructors with a hand on the wheel steering for the pupil, they must be terrified !
All my kids are very confident drivers, also taught them how to drive fast and safe after passing test, better than leanring the hard way.
Gave my niece a lesson before her test as she had been paying an instructor and she couldn't reverse around a corner. After a few attempts reversing faster than she was used to to she got it, I told her it doesn't matter how many times you have to stop and do it again because each time you learn something and you have to make mistakes to learn (she passed)
