No, storing it on its side in relative cool and dark is ideal.
12 years is a longish time for many wines. But Champagne, as all wines, have a shelf life so maybe you just came to the end of it. Recently we had to throw away about 12 cases of wine, as they had all gone over. The bloke who sold them to us knew we were buying in bulk cos of Brexit but he never bothered to say, ""oh, by the way, drink them all in the next year or so." bastid. And they weren't cheap either. Funnily his cheaper stuff, with prolly plenty of sulphite in it, is fine.
