Avoid poison. I had one poisoned and died under me site office, and one poisoned and died after crawling under the floor boards of a farm house I was lodging in. The stink followed by flies is something I will never forget -------- :(
I think it depends on what his place is like. If there are places where rats can crawl into and die.
We've done it both in the UK and France, even once in a rented place which was part of a Chateau and never had the problems you mention.
I think you were just a bit unlucky, tbh.;)

I thought the poison made them thirsty & they would go looking for a water source. ?? I dont even
know where I heard this. I could just use a 12 gauge if I hear them scrambling about. :D

There are about 4 different types of poison which kill in different ways, the most common is an anticoagulant so they bleed to death internally. Tis all on the web.
In frogland, obvs being surrounded by farmland and forest we constantly put poison in our roof spaces.
We once had a thing called a "Loir" (don't have these over ere) which is quite big and he used to wake us up every morning at about 3-4 o'clock stomping around over our bedroom in his hobnailed boots. After giving him a bit of a chance to move on we got fed up, slung some poison in the loft space and heard no more from him. And no smell, no flies, nothing. The idea is that they go elsewhere to croak.
It does work, otherwise producers would go bust. Pros use it all the time. ;)
There are shedloads of people who bang on about it being inhumane, dangerous etc etc. The web is full of them. But catching them any other way is feckin hard, we know, we've tried.
Best of luck with it.;)
Oh but the very best is to have a raptor living locally, which we have too luckily. By far the best, ideally. But they don't fly into our loft spaces.

Just had to share this!

Hope you all have had a great day :)
The Mrs and I have got the roofing sheets on. Just the sides to do but they will have to wait until next weekend lol ;)
No pics of it completely finished but she did get one with only a couple of sheets to go.

Is the garage/shed roof in the background your neighbours? It looks a bit "ropey" at this angle.

I had a moment of madness yesterday and put a robot bid on a pukkah Myford ML7 lathe.
The seller changed the sale type from just bidding to a By It Now option and someone went for it.
NVM, probably for the best as I don't have the room and Mrs. C. would have had harsh words for me if I had won. ;)

That is a shame, two lathes is how it starts...... you really do 'need' and milling machine (or two) just to be safe though :)

If you get the bait right, this baby will sort your problem. The little ratty sticks his head up the pipe to sniff the bait and touches the hair trigger and gets punched hard in the back of the head. It’s powered by co2 so can keep punching them all night if there’s lots of them :)
