Has anybody got a 4.0 p38 engine for sale at a decent price or know of one in the yorkshire area, I may have got a 3.9 disco engine sorted but its not a deffo.cheers guys
Because it is the same engine!!Hi Chris.
Understand the dilemma. The 3.9 engine is just as susceptable to the liner / block problem though. Can your mechanic fully test the 3.9 block before fitting. If its high mileage it may just be a short term fix. Has it been rebuilt or just removed from a disco & sat there?
Yes the block is the same..the THOR engine used different external components and sensors...but the Engine internal (Block etc) is the same!sort of the same thing so the 3.9 off the classic is the same engine that would mean i can get a 3.9 bare block and use all the stuff off my 4.0 thor engine on it
Only if the Cooling system isn't maintained....had a 3.9 classic on gas and my L322 is on gas...no issues (Rad went due to stone chip and the water pump bearing failed is all but these aren'y bespoke to a Gas install)On a side note also whats everyone's general take on these running on LPG, I know it runs hotter on gas so is this a contributer to HG failure, mines on gas
Only if the Cooling system isn't maintained
Jury is still out on this issue for me. I replaced the Rad, Pump, coolant when i got mine & 10k later still had HG's go (between middle cylinders so no water loss / overheat). Whether this was down to LPG i can't say. But that said, it's better not to meet the devil half way so keeping the cooling system in top order is a must for any rover V8.
