Up my own ar5e
Hi,
This is my first LR, ex military 110 hardtop. Supposedly the engine is the original 1994 200tdi, although I wouldn’t know myself...
I’ve seen others asking the same question but no responses in Layman’s terms. I’m fairly handy but don’t know a lot about car mechanics. I have previously serviced my own cars with no problem however, although Defenders are a different kettle of fish.

Could someone please provide me with a job list in order to carry out a full service? And exactly what oil I need and other parts? Links would be helpful.

Many thanks

The military never used the 200tdi. Itll will either be the 2.5n/a or the 300tdi.
Your best bet is the buy a Heynes manual and use that. Or you could see if you can find the MOD servicing schedule on the interwebs, and use that.

Very interesting... the last chap did seem to know about them and described it as a 200tdi. It’s definitely got a turbo, I know that much... how can I tell for sure?

Stick a photo of the engine up on here and we will be able to tell you which engine you have.
Thanks, just took this:

Apologies for being so knowledge-less, but is the 300tdi better or worse? How does it compare in terms of economy? And does it look original to you guys?

Going back to servicing... Haynes manual is fine but it’s just an endless list. I was hoping someone could state what consists of a full service for a now 300tdi and where I can find the correct parts?

Thanks again

What age is it?

Standard army vehicles were the 2.5na (non turbo diesel).

Later wolf vehicles were 300tdi but they look different to that.

Some ‘green fleet’ (non-combat land rovers) were normal 300tdi I think

Have a look on a VIN decoder, that will tell you what it left the factory with originally

There was Some v8 petrol stuff to

Disco 200 and 300tdis have tbe same power, torque and mpg. That is not the original engine to the vehicle. The MOD engines where lime green and have a huge 24v alternator. That looks like a Disco 200tdi bolted onto an LT77 gearbox, it sits too far back in the bay, if I'm seeing it right. That's not a problem of cause, it just means the previous guy was either a liar or didnt know what he was talking about.

As for servicing. I'd suggest if you dont know what something is, Google an image, but Haynes does to you what oils and lubes to use.

Clearly didn’t know what he was on about... he only owned it for 7 or so months but was told it was all original. Not too sure why one would lie about it having been changed though. Is it possible the military changed its engine as it wasn’t decommissioned until 2017? What is an LT77 gearbox?

The MOD would have swapped it for another green 300tdi. Theyve got loads of spares.
The 200tdi was fitted with the older LT77 gearbox, the 300tdi was fitted with the newer R380. The LT77 sits further back in the engine bay.

Make sure when you order engine parts that you order Discovery 200tdi parts, not Defender 200 or 300tdi parts. There are numerous differences. I have the same conversion, I love it.

Ok, thanks for your advice. How do you go about your servicing? Do you get somebody else to do it for you or do it yourself? And how often do you do it?
And in that case... I take it I shouldn’t be concerned that somebody hasn’t been transparent somewhere down the line with regards to it being a 200tdi conversion? I mean everything seems to function fine, only annoying thing is gear 2 crunching when changing down from gear 1

I service myself. I was taught how to service Landys when I was in the Army, so I've got an idea what and where things are. Anything I can't remember, I use Heynes manual, everything's in there, you just have to look it up. I do weekly checks, check and top up as required. 6 Monthly servicings, again check and top up oils and lubes, clean air filter, and hunt down every nipple and grease them. Yearly, drain oil, change filter, new oil, lube all nipples. Then another 6 monthly. Then I do a 24 monthly, again change oil, all filters, check gearbox, transfer box and diff oils and top up as required. Grease all nipples. Everything else is changed as required.

You might want to check if the new engine has been entered onto the V5 and your insurance company might want to know, as it's not the vehicles original engine. Power and Torque are significantly more, so insurance will want to know.

Discovery 200tdi as said. Looks quite well fitted too.
Order engine parts for the 200 disco. Fuel filter is 2.5 nad though.
Air filter ...dunno, could be anything but if you remove the element it will probably have a part number on it.
