OK So there are times when you just know you've done the right thing... and there are times that aren't so clear cut.

Kai is now the official proud ownder of a V Registered 109 Station Wagon. Hi face was a picture when it arrived... as you can probably imagine. Now its not very clean... yet. It's got a couple of minor problems... chassis?!?!? but he thinks it is the best thing since Henry Ford first kicked his cheaffeur out of the car and told him to walk down the road waving a red flag.

I mean you can see that he is getting straight on with the essential job.... make sure mum doesn't complain too much!

Thanks to those who managed to get here to make this a very special day for him. Now... anyone got a series III manual? Seems like I have a little homework to catch up on!


chris why not put the series on the disco? shorten the body to fit then you will have a nice one off v8
 
because the 109 can run on parafin it wil start on the button in the morning every morning even when your fingers tips are frozen. It can be driven without modification in the heat of the sahara and the freezing temperatures of the antartic it has on silly electric ignition system nor an ecu of efi system to go wrong its land rovering at the most basic level and its completly un messed with and not butchered like most landys are which is rare these days. Shall i in on? It will teach real driving skills opposed to getting a v8 hybrid coil springs thing before actually learning the basics. It has real springs etc etc good morning everyone! Jai

Not to put a damper on things, but how are you going to do a full body off, new chassis restoration on your front drive?

OK, ok i know that some of you will think thaht I am mad to have bought it. I happen to disagree. It is going to be loads of fun... frustration and experience. Irrespective of the overall success of the project. Getting somewhere to use as a little workshop through the summer would be a bonus so if anyone knows anywhere...
 
I did an online search for part time course every Monday 6pm til 9pm Monday evenings they said it was at barnfield enquiries welcome courses run for 10 weeks and will start shortly unless it was out of date. Dunstable college is good but my mate has qualified as a welder and I wouldnt trust him to weld anything except RSJ'a with a computerised machine. He butchured my Astra and I had to do my best to get it back to some order. Never trust anyone that says they can weld unless seeing their work first hand! Plus Dunstable is kinda regarded as a dumbass college well it was when I was leaving school. Jai
 
i could do with doin a course aswell, i got a welder and dont want to go near the car with it yet, look on youtube there alot of usefull instructions on welding, im gona watch a few more get some scrap and get stuck in :)
 
I've acyually passed basic welding but that was a few years ago and an add on to an electronics course so it was more a case of turn up and not feck up and you get the pass mark tbh. would like to have a play Andys welder is a bit of a beast to be using for me a beginner but looking into getting a decent smallish 150A jobbie. Jai
 
If I am going to buuy a welder, I reckon I should make sure it will tackle most any landy job. Guessing the chassis would be the toughest so what spec would I be looking at to cover that sort of thing I wonder.
 
Screwfix do a 150amp mig welder for £150 which is gas or gasless, running it gasless saves on having to have a bottle licence and the throw away bottles are a wast of time. This type welder and size will do any job you plan to use it for and at that price the first job would almost pay for it, it's what we use and it works really well.
 
Whats the crack with gasless? I was told its nowhere near as good a weld but they gave no reason Jai

Gasless tends to splatter a bit more and you get a brown powdery type residue from the flux BUT you can use a gasless MIG outside even when its windy and still get acceptable results. For the purists, welding with gas is the preference but to be honest, for the sort of patch repairs and minor fabrication you are likely to be doing, gasless would be fine.

Most gasless welders will take gas but the small gas bottles don't last long so really you are probably best to go with gasless.
 
Mine is 130 amp and its run on pub gas. The only requirement to the gas is for it to be inert. Obviously argon gives a much better shroud and better finished weld but costs far too much. The most common problem is people using to high a setting. I use 0.6mm wire for body panels as it requires less ampage to weld and gives just as good a result as 0.8mm wire. you can get really neat small welds with the smaller wire and they are the same strength. In my time I have welded all sorts from cars to rsj's and 2 inch footplates and my best advice to anybody would be to take your time and practice. always weld pushing forward and get a good pool going with the lowest setting to avoid burning the material away. if anybody doubts my welds come take a look at my bumper!
