OK Question: Anyone know an easier way to clean old gaskets off? Stripping the xfewr box I have never seen so many old gaskets! taking more time to clean the damn things with a stanley blade than it would to do the rest of the rebuild!

you can get an acid based spray on gasket remover, or if you have a wire wheel you can use that to get it off, i used to clean allsorts of castings and casings with a wire wheel on a bench grinder

Does the gasket remover have an effect on other components? seals and so on?

I like the wire brush on a wheel idea but I was worried that I might score the casting of the transfer box exessively.

best to use a less agressive wheel instead of steel try a plastic equlivent steel used too heavy on the ally tranny box can wear into it. or just be very careful when using it Jai

use it on alloy sparingly, the wire wheel shouldn't damage the castings i have used it on cast alloy before (thermostat housings,gearbox cases etc) and had no ill effects gives a good key for painting on external surfaces too if you are really worried use a brass crimp brush

Well, I've been talking to Jamie Rangie boy. I think he wants to do Santa Pod lanes when they open. I think I upset him too winding him up about a lifted auto rangie on insa turbo/simex is just point and steer. Lol oh well.

I must set some goals,

Tomorrow/Sat morning I must get my front propshaft UJ done.
Sunday I must sort my Rear Transfer seal and diff input seal.

Monday I must dream (to keep me motivated) about doing some off road driving in France sometime over the next 3 or 4 months one weekend. Jai

Jai, your statement there says it all, believe me. Keep your dreams my man they'll come true. Plus my mate has a villa down in the south of France we're looking to do a trip this summer if work doesn't get in our way. There's always a spot there.

I'm always winding people up don't mean anything by it just funny to see people get all defensive. Keeps people on their toes. Aslong as its not going too far and its not personal i think its fair.

Screwy ferry prices were from £12 each way to dunkirk so Was investigating that for a camping/offroading weekend makes more sense than just doing the local lanes nothing really changes locally somtimes we get stuck, somtimes we don't. Its more of a mission a reason to get the motor in good condition and more meaningful and hopefully alot of fun too. Jai

Oh bloody hell!

There is one job I have never got right on any motor I have worked on. Timing. So I need to remove the water pump on the slitty and renew the seals. How was I to know that it lies somewhere behind the crankshaft pulley and will require the cam belt removal! I can't even get the camshaft pulley off! Ah well we live and learn... let you know what happens tomorrow!

im in the same boat, but i got no choice lol, im just gona replace everything anyway so gota save for a few weeks gona cost bout £160 to do but then i no the engine will last a few more miles, then i got brakes, suspension, boot floor, front inner wheel arches and tyres to get befor mot.
