help with identifying defender steering part needed

i've bent one of the bars that keeps the wheels in-line,

its bent in the middle which causes the wheels to spread out from each other,

the bar goes accross the front of the vehicle just behind the front hubs,

can anyone tell me what its called and what part number it is please?

sorry if its a dumb question but i'm a complete novice and have only had the landy for a week!

have you tried to batter the rod back into shape?
get a fat mate to stand on each end of it while you knock seven bells out of it with a xxl sheffield fine adjuster.
if you can get it nearly straight you should be able to adjust it using the bellends....sorry i meant track rod ends.
 
Track-rod tube about £22 as a new part but if you are replacing that I would also strongly suggest you rerplace the TRE's at the same time as they are a service item and will need to be replaced some time. I wouldn't recomend straightening the tube as they are hollow and if you flatten it too much then it will have a weak point, also they are prone to rusting out but it isn't vert noticeable until it is too late (weren't a couple of people killed a few years ago when the TRE came adrift from a rusty tube?).
I personally have gone for the solid bars now widely available, I bought mine for £75 inc TRE's from Green Oval and at that price they compare very favourably with the standard items.
Make sure you get the tracking set accurately, I know from experience how the tracking being slightly out can knock thousands of miles off the life of your tyres and also upset the handling at the same time. I have used Just Tyres for the past 6-years, free check and if it needs adjusting it is £23 (only been adjusted twice in 6-years, first time because I had just fitted new TRE's and then a few weeks ago when I fitted the new bars & TRE's).
 
sheeee-it boy . if it not too bent save yerself some money by straightning the thing. and save even more money by not renewing the tre's if they ain't *****d.
going by litch's theory you should change yer tyres as they are a service item and will to be replaced some time. and change yer brakes at the same time because i believe that some people died when their brakes failed and they hit a tree.
 
oh! and change yer fuel tank because being steel they could rust through and cause an explosion or even worst !! it may ignite your suspension bushes which as we know will wipe out the entire planet!
 
i did try bending it back with a jack and the winch but the steering still felt very dodgy, a land rover friend i've made had a good condition used one in his yard, so i fitted that and it's sorted,
the tracking feels spot on but i'll get it aligned when i get my tyres in a few weeks.

glad thats sorted,
it don't matter what vehicle it is, you should always try to fix the busted bit before fitting a new one. unless you happen to be able to get yer hands on another for nowt. and don't change anything just for the sake of it except for perhaps clutches..... if you have the g/box off for something else and the clutch is nearing the end of its life
