Help - 2001 (Y) TD5 Auto - Smoking like hell

Hi All,

Dropped some friends off at heathrow this evening (lets see if they get there flight:) ) and on the way home (Kenilworth, Warwickshire) I came off the A46, stopped at the roundabout and as I pulled away, couldn't see out the back due to the masses of blue smoke:eek: . Looked like when I blew a turbo last year, but other symptoms are different. Powers OK (was very low when the turbo went), but there's a clicking/grating noise on acceleration, gudder at low speed and it doesn't want to stop properly (like your still on the throttle). Also, no signs of oil in the engine bay or on the floor.

Any advice / diagnosis greatfully received!

is there not some recall for faulty abs or ace pumps - spewing oil onto to a hot manifold ?? do a google on discovery recalls...

are you losing oil from the engine - levels dropped ??
 
Thanks for the advice, but I don't think that's the problem, should have said, the smoke is pouring out of the exhaust and the tailpipe has a ring of oil round it, so the engines burning oil (like mad) - could it be a piston ring?

It could. Or you could have a broken valve. Sounds a bit expensive. If the smoke is blue it's definitely oil.:eek:
 
Pull the stopper wire off the injection pump so it won't start.

Lift the bonnet and open the windows.

Turn the engine over on the starter.

You WANT to hear an even beat thump thump thump thump thump thump thump thump as it turns over compression on each cylinder.

If it clearly isn't an even beat this suggests one cylinder has no compression.

You can check this with a big spanner on the crankshaft pulley (keep that stopper wire OFF!) but if the beat is irregular what's the point?

but if the engine runs smoothly and the starter beat is OK, you haven't dropped a valve.

You may have a cracked piston. Bad news.
More likely one of the oil seals on the turbo has gone. Get a repair kit and DIY fix it!

Thanks for the advice, it was the turbo (again - 2nd one in 18 months) blow to bits, so now need to check the boost pressure as the oil level was fine and the bl**dy things shouldn't be failing like that!!!:mad: :mad: :mad:

Repair kit is about £50 and takes a couple of hours.

Fit a boost gauge for £15.
