Right, so I know absolutely nothing...

But I've been reading a lot... Can anyone help with these very basic questions?

1. If SW means station wagon, why are there plenty of landies around that say "4C SW DT" that have hard tops and no seats in the back? (And I'm assuming DT is the older way of writing TD?)

2. Where is the 3rd VIN if I've found the one in the engine bay and the one on the front of the chassis on the driver's side?

3. Why are lots of landies classed as "light 4x4 utility" vehicles when they have SW bodies, and most SW's are "estates"?

4. Where can I find the engine number on a 2.5L TD engine block from a 1990 landy?

5. Why does my station wagon's VIN have an "A" as the 7th letter (for 2 door pick-up, hood cab, truck cab or soft/hard top) rather than an "M" (for station wagon)?

Sorry for the dull post... woudl really appreciate any thoughts!

okay 3rd vin should be on a plate in the cab. very few landys are in the same configuration as they were when they left the factory. people swap hardtops, fit truckcabs remove seats, fit seats and generally bugger about and fettle wiv em, description don't count for anything. People call em CSW or SW because they think you'll pay more for em.

Yeah, I found that site earlier today, which is how I found out that the VIN doesn't tally with the vehicle being SW. I just wondered if that was a normal thing for landies, or like you said, was because it had been modified?

It's normal stationwagons had seats and windows in the hardtop, Light utility was the description for Hardtop vans. but they get changed around so much they rarely retain the same specs for the whole of there life. Also Landrover chopped and changed em even before they left the factory. So it may have been intended as a CSW and left the factory as a hardtop van.

Can anyone help me find the engine number - it's supposed to be a 19J, and looks like one, but I can't find the serial number and I've been told it's not the original engine due to yellow paint on it. Here's a pic with the head off, could some explain in simple terms which part I need to look at to find the number?

And when I say simple, I tried this...

"Early 19J engines - the number is located on a machined surface on the left hand side of the engine, adjacent to the exhaust manifold front.

Later 19J engines - the number is located on the right-hand side of the engine, above the fuel lift pump."

cleaned the surfaces, but no luck...

Would be v grateful for any wisdom...

Hi redhand, sorry to bother, but you've been massively helpful. Can you be any more specific, bearing in mind I don't know my way around engines fantastically and this one is half taken apart. Is it obvious? On a plate? When they say left I assume left is as you look at it not as you drive it? It just seems crazy that I can't see it. What if it's a later 19J, will it be the other

Well before it blew up its performance pointed more towards 2.5 TD than a TDi, but it's just frustrating that I can't find it!
