"are you sure your glow plugs are working, your engine will simply not start without them,"

Ridiculous, diesel engines work on compression for the ignition of the fuel. The glow plugs are to heat the diesel to thin it down to aid starting when particulary cold - the more viscous the diesel the harder it is to compress to ignite. Any diesel should start, any time, without the aid of glow plugs at around 3 degrees and above.
tom

NO this engine won't reliably start without them at this time of the year even more so with the veg oil in her tank... To thin it down? REALLY? I would check that one... they are there to help vaporise the fine mist of diesel sprayed into the cylinder or in the case of the 2.5 the combustion chamber. If the plug is hot enough, when the diesel is injected the heat from the plug alone is sometimes enough to ignite the diesel.

Exactly correct ....

The conditions required for a cold start without any added heat are so severe, the engine would not survive long afterwards.

Without the glow plugs the compression ratio would need to be between 25:1 and 30:1, AND the starter motor would need to turn the engine over briskly. As soon as it started running the extreme compression would knock seven bells out of the whole engine. Old Lister standing engines (I have one) used a system of VARIABLE compression, high for starting, and less for running under load.

Many modern diesels simply will not fire up without glowplugs working. Anyone have a Sierra 1.9D for example? At starter motor speeds on a cold day the heat of compression alone is just not going high enough to light the fuel.

WITH red hot glowplugs, the engine whirls over, the injector skoots fuel spray onto the plug, that spray turns from a atomised mist into VAPOUR (gas) which suddenly raises the pressure a bit, and that raises the HEAT of compression, and with any luck the HEAT goes up enough too to pass the point of ignition. VAAARRRRRRooommmmm !

so after all this did the blonde girl get it started ?

I'm disappointed the warmth of her smile didn't get it going right away.

It must be a cold-hearted landRover ....

I know she could light my fire anytime!

Yup, easy start sprayed down the inlet after the airfilter and it starts right away. A mate whose IP had got buggered due to water in his tank found this to be the only way to start it (TDi IP fails in a limp home mode, but is a **** to start).

Be careful using damp start - it's an engine's equivalent of Crack-cocaine ;)

Well me dears. I got her going when I got home from work. Had the battery on charge all day, sprayed a bit o Easy Start over the air thingy. And VVVVVVVVRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMM! **** loads o smoke came out which looked a bit white.. But she went.. an the smoke has now cleared. Took her for a good spin. Got some glow plugs from Halfrauds but, suprise, suprise, they int the right ones. So they are going back tomoz. I did try and see how easily the old glow plugs would come out, an they seem to be well jammed in. So I left well alone for now cos I did'nt wanna **** up the nut thing. So I guess i'll just see if she starts in the morning.. Hopefully it was just the battery being a bit flat. Am still gonna get new plugs and fit them. XXX

Good one HB

. Glad its sorted.

aye keep yer can of ether in the house, it dunt like the cold its self, it will start every time ewith a little squirt, be careful tho, like tek 5 says, its like crack cocaine to an injin, but on the plus side, it shifts all the carbon deposits off the top o yer pistons

Yeah, & before yer know it yer'll find yer Landy hanging around on street corners giving tow jobs ter Gaylanders fer jest one more hit. It jest int worth it HB!
