May be sacrilege to some, but I had a test drive of the Evoque today, and have to say I rather like it.

Won't be changing my P38, but as a car for the other half, it's currently leading the field out of the ones we were considering.

Nice smooth ride, and didn't feel like it was short on power if needed. I can see why they're so popular.

Check for recalls etc.

What are you comparing it to?

Audi Q3 and BMW X3.

Ruled the Audi out, mostly based on experience of my current daily driver, which is an A4 B7, and has been a real disappointment compared to my previous A4 B5 which served me well for 14 years and 250,000 miles.

The BMW is a nice car, much better put together than an old 3 series I had years ago.

Not a decision I'm rushing in to, as cars are expensive, so I tend to keep mine for 200,000 miles or 15 years. Supporting British manufacturing jobs is also a consideration, regardless of who actually owns the company.

Is the x3 quite a bit bigger? Never driven a evoke but they sit about 2 inches higher than my focus estate.

Yes, X3 is a couple of inches taller, and about a foot longer than the Evoque.

If I was replacing my P38 for myself, it would be a tough call between a BMW X5, and VW Touareg, as new Range Rover is out of my budget these days.

The Evoque does seem good for the target market though. Wife currently drives a Corsa, and wants something a bit bigger, but without the feeling of driving (and parking) a shed.
