Thats right boys, head gasket failure.
The work will be covered under warranty, should I get the garage to fit the new modified gasket & the oil rail or if they fit the old type will it last 12 months

Thanks

Tess

try for the new one - but they may not fit the oil rail as most warranties are to "same state as before failure" deffo the new gasket tho.

Make sure yu get the remote thermostat option fitted and i wud recomend an electric water pump if yu can afford it.

Hi Tess sorry for your troubles, Did this occur before the air lock in the coolant system or is it a recent hgf? There is usually gunge in coolant expansion tank and same gunge on dipstick for prolonged hgf

As MHM has already suggested new PRT stat is better option. Not sure if warranty cover is obliged to fit new oil rail. That will be itemised in the repair invoice

What will a remote thermostat & electric water punp cost & who sells them?

For the records, one day I could hear slushing in the heater when I revved the engine, undid both bleed scrwes in the coolant hoses & coolant came flowing, the garage did a "block test " all OK. Then on last saturday I topped up the coolant about 1/4 of a litre went for along drive , i noticed slightly lumpy idling & only warm air coming from the heater. On sunday had the same lumpy idling then driving, the temp needle to the red, I stopped the car called the RAC & he put about a gallon of water in & noticed mayo on the dipstick & oil filler cap & presto hey....

Lumpy idling sounds right, would even put money on it being cylinder one (nearest timing belts) you will have coolant encrusted on the valves but the repair company should clean this up when changing gasket. Get them to renew intake gasket as well on the injection manifold.

Rimmer bros do the remote PRT. cant get into gallery to put up a picture. I dont fully back the electric pump for the standard 1.8i but makes sense for the KV6, as it has more metal to cool after engine switch off.

I cut an air vent in the base of the sump cover after my hgf. It takes a bit longer to heat up on cold mornings so the extra air flow is working.

You could of course take off the sump cover for max air flow/cooling but it keeps all the crud away from the engine and is best left on.

If you fit new gasket and PRT stat then you shouldnt have any more probs. Some peeps insist on the new oil rail for extra engine stiffness but this is a controversal issue amongst k-series engine enthusiasts.

I agree with lr about the elec water pump - it is just "belt and braces" - the cost of the pump is fairly small compared to another hgf - so i wud do it.

nope - i got absolutely nothing from the manuf or third party suppliers - it was a case of "we copied lr - and it works!

Tess - one more point about the elec pump - it has the facility to run on after the engine is turned off - thereby eliminating hotspots (cause ofd hgf) and keeping the water temp more uniform.

is it right that there was a modification to the thermostat in 2002 . mine is a 52 plate 2002. ive just looked at the QED web site & their remote thermostat is £125

No sounds expensive. get on to Rimmer bros link below

Parts Spares & Accessories for Triumph MG Rover Land Rover Discovery Freelander Defender Range Rover & Rover SD1

ask them to post you their newest price catalogue. their PRT is £42.17 + VAT

Depends on your garage doing the work what they want to spend if not covered under warranty.

I have a pic of the page in the catalogue but cant upload to the gallery.

MGR.org guys will be able to tell you the year the new stat came in. Chris T will know that sort of info. He hangs out in the MGF/TF tech section, send him a PM

Mornin... yes the frivolity of the chat in here, you just cant get the posts these days.

Plus have to cringe at some of the posts.... NOT work friendly, could bet pile of abuse from I.T. dept

Work - whats that? ah - yes - what i shd be doing :(
i cant see anything about the date of the mod - but will keep looking. It may not be important - because if it wasnt done on Tess' vehicle - then it wont be covered under warranty - I still maintain it is worth getting it done. Yes - it does cost more money - but it is like any insurance policy - it is only worth while when yu discover it is required.
