This is another reason I thought about changing forum...The brains of some people leave a lot to be desired!

i dunno theres a certain perverse pleasure at holding some of these little t**** behind when your doing 30 on the back lanes and they want to proove and I mean PROOVE that they're a "proper" rally driver - they get proper yampy.

No not a banker!

I've had my fair share of fast motors.
Most recently just sold my 10 month old Porsche 911 (997) that I bought new last year. And had new Porsche's before that.
Had hotrods, American motors, M3's, Xjrs, Cosworths, all variations.

My point was putting a 1300 gearbox in a 1600 mk3 Escort does not give you a 3.5 sec 0-60 time!
And must go some way to showing the mentality of some folks if they believe it!

I must agree with you, the mk3 escort 1600 will of been lucky to have 70hp at the wheels and a standard 0-60 of close on 10 secs so no amount of gearbox changing is gonna knock 7 secs off your time, also wasnt the mk3 escort front wheel drive? i believe an experiment carried out by Courtney Turbo stated it was pretty much impossible to get below 5 secs 0-60 in a front wheel drive:doh:

Agree on the gearing and impossibility of simply swapping a box to achieve 3.5secs 0-60 time.

...........

However, its possible to achieve very fast (like, 2.5 secs) 0-60mph time in a FWD car. Its very difficult though (but possible). Basically you need a grippy piece of track (ie a well prepared 1/4 mile strip with trackbite applied in the right way, and rubbered down the right amount), a fat set of really soft compound slicks, running about 5psi, a decent burnout and a powerful engine in a light car. But yes, for practical road going, road legal cars, there's a limit based on the most agressive (ie soft, almost slicks) tyres you can legally use and all the other compromises made. My car used Yokohama Advan 032R, ran at around 18psi and a decent burnout was worth 0.5-1.0 secs (on the 1/4 mile time, which is going to directly relate to the 0-60 time since the traction issues are all to do with the start) easily. The downside was my tyres lasted about 30 miles LOL!

I,m gonna put my hands up right now and admit that I used to drive like a " f%%king tw%%t " when I was yougner. Overtaking everything, cutting in at the last minute and at every set of lights I had to be away first.
I also used to pull ugly birds and fight nasty looking hard nuts !.

The " Invicability " of youth eh !.

I realise now that I was not a good driver, but an absolutely appalling one.

Funnily enough, the first time I got done for speeding, ( one of only two times ever ),was in 1987 in our 1984 110 whilst on the way to another farm to do some ploughing. I was doing 46 in a 40. The copper said to me, " how fast were you going sir ", I replied, " as fast as I could officer ".

I,m glad I havnt got a fast car now, cause that " dangerous boy racer " is still inside me somwhere !!!. I lost a very dear freind of mine a couple of years ago on the Nurberg ? ring. I miss him. When I see people driving to fast I think of him.

Del.

the gti brigade tend to spend hundreds/thousands getting ther cars to go faster without realizing they need to spend the same amount on up rating the brakes and suspension because the 1.2 fiesta shopping trolley was never designed to handle 2000000 BHP.

yeah I know what you mean... My cousin has a fiesta zetec-s which is a 1.6. quite nippy standard but every time I see him he goes on about how he had modded it.... Like 500quid suspension set, how he was planning to put on a turbo and not to forget how he'd stripped out the car to give extra power and better handling...yeah right, I reply to everything he says with ''But its still a fiesta'' He cant work out what I mean by it. The simple fact of the matter is that If you want a fast car buy a fast carand not spen £1000's on modding a bargain basement car that isn't designed to handle extreme use. For example the golf gti mk1 that a lad at work has which he has fitted a 225bhp audi tt engine into and already there are cracks showing at the seams in the bulkhead. NOT GOOD

I don't think there's any particular association with non-insurance and GTIs? I'd have said its more common across the cheapest, bangers rather than the top model in a range? If its to do with undeclared mods, then applies equally well to any other kind of modified vehicle too. Of course, if you can show evidence to the contrary, I'm happy to be proven wrong!

Round here its not the chavs that are the problem it's the caravans! Nothing winds me up more than being stuck behind one of them doing less than half the speed limit for the road. Fair enough if thats the speed theyre comfortable driving at but when they pass by ample opportunitys to pull over and let the queue of traffic behind pass safely, that is what annoys me.

On a simlar note, nothing warms my heart more than seing a caravan being held up by a tractor or combine! :pound:

Years ago had a MKIII Escort, one of the first 500 1600cc models built, which has a 4-speed box. Towards the end of the time I had it the gearbox gave up the ghost big time, the problem I then had was that you could not get a four speed 1600 box, so the two choices where convert to a 5 speed very big job or drop in a 1300cc four speed, which I did.

However the 1300CC was a lot lower geared the result top speed down to 80mph 0-60 just a shade over 3.5 seconds, as I lived in London at the time use to go Porsche Banker hunting in the City, did they feel like small penises when they lost at the traffic lights to a Escort :)

So let me get this straight. Your 1.6 CVH engined Ford Escort with maybe 90 bhp accelerated to 60 mph faster than every vehicle in the current Ferrari range, and matched a 900 bhp / ton Caparo in acceleration stakes?

Sorry, but I call bull****. It would have been lucky to do the dash in three times as long.

My Kawa Ninja could just do 60 in little over 3.5, so a 1.6 MK 111 Escort...i don't think so...Maybe if it is was being pulled by a EUROFIGHTER....

me mate brett had a nissan pulsar gtir with 450bhp at the wheels (4wd) that would eat F360s and F355s the only thing that would out accelerate it in a strait line was a matt black capri........ we found out later its got a supercharged 302 ford V8 pushing out over 600bhp

so by goin from yer 79 hp and 3,58,1 final drive ratio to yer 79hp and 3,84,1 final drive ratio you achieved the ultimate goal of makin a ferrari muncher? nice:rolleyes:

1.3 litre-----------------------1.6 litre
1st gear ratios 3,58,1---------------- 3,15,1
2nd gear ratios 2,05,1---------------- 1,91,1
3rd gear ratios 1,35,1 -----------------1,28,1
4th gear ratios 0,95,1------------------ 0,95,1

who wants to werk the sums out:D

musta had a **** load o paving flags to keep the bastid on the road with that sort of power, my 3.0 was a pig on the back end as standard, used to have to keep a back of cement in the back to stop it stepping out in the rain:rolleyes:
