Greenlaning on your own?

Guys,

Thanks for all your points ive taken them all on board. Ive since had a msg about joining a few guys on the plain in December (thankyou dan).

In the mean time ive bought a os map of that area and tomorrow im going to check it out! Just a bimble nothing mad. Mainly to get used to signage, maps and lanes etc.

Im not taking chances with terrain so if its iffy ill find another. Ive got full tank plus jerry, hi lift, spare battery, tools, water, map, sat nav, phone charger etc and most importantly stove and tea bags!!!!

Ive taken all your points on board but im growing a pair!!! Fed up of watching others on youtube!!!

Wish me luck!! Ill report back tomorrow evening.

I was on the plain last weekend, be careful of any standing water, there are a few that are very deep and one in particular I know has a nice hole in the ctr which swallowed one of our groups 90's...

If i'd spotted this last night i'd have been up for joining you today! (had a meeting in Trowbridge this morning and ended up going for a walk on the edge of the plain near the Westbury Horse this afternoon)

I'd second what Neil said about standing water - not just at the moment but at all times on the plain. I've felt foolish stopping and checking big-looking puddles to find they're only 10cm deep... but i'd rather do that 1000 times than drive straight into something and find it's a 3ft bomb hole.

so i done it!!!!!

went out yesterday and I'm addicted!

sussed the map the night before and drove down to market lavington and went that way. if you look on the os map I went clockwise around the long hard packed gravel path.
the lanes inward of this gravel lane all had red flags flying so kept away from them. When I got to the end of the gravel track I came back but followed the rutted path that runs parallel to it.

will sound boring to you guys but was enough for me as was on my own etc. was dead peaceful took it steady and stopped for a couple of coffees on the Kelly kettle.

I can honestly say that this little stint has made me addicted now! I'm on four on four off at work so will be back up there Thursday/Friday!!

Sounds like you had fun,

But do make sure you are travelling on byways, or permissive byways. Just because there is a rutted lane next to gravel track, One may be a byway the other may not.

As it is , If I understood you correctly then you were on the permissive byway and the byway. So all is good. I drove the same sections last week.

yes was glued to the map and signs to ensure I didn't stray, so am I right in saying that the inner lanes from the gravel is where you see most guys (when the flags are down). if you look at the map and all lanes were open you travel forever I reakon

That could well be the one I sank my 90 in at the end of August, about a mile west of Tidworth. Looked like a big puddle. Wasn't.

This is the one. Looks nice and is a gentle slope, then there is a big hole in the middle of it, which puts water over the bonnet of a 90. Stuck the 90 in the hole.

The lanes inside the flags are good... havent been around on a "non firing day" for ages though.

I normally head a bit further east (sometimes starting on the rutted track you referred to). The D3 video looks like it was mostly shot in the area between bulford, everleigh and tidworth.

Also worth being aware salisbury silt is very corrosive to landys.... give the chassis a good jetwash afterwards.

Yep, that's the one, did exactly the same thing over August bank holiday, the blokes who dragged me out said its much more shallow over to one side. Lesson learnt: check depth before entering!
