Just to add something different to this thread, when I changed my R380 oil,mtf was not available locally so used Castrol smx (sythetic gear oil) Halfords sell it.It is quite dear but my gearbox was silky smooth with easy gear selection hot and cold for the duration i owned my 300 tdi-maybe I was just lucky, but I would deffo use again.

I recently put MTF in my LT77

It's no thicker than ATF by any great degree, and it's changes better, less grabby, happier to slide the selectors around for sure.

So, for hotter climates: - MTF94 for Gearbox?
- ... and what for Transfer case?
- ... what for diffs?

Cheers!

What say you about GL4 Dave?

I use ep80 mineral GL4 you see as I feel it is old fashioned therefore suitable...

Well, Rave says this for a D2 :

"Gearbox oil:
Use of gearbox oils other than those specified may result in serious damage to the gearbox,

Manual Gearbox:
Use Texaco MTF 94 oil for refill and topping-up. If MTF 94 is not available, ATF Dexron IID or ATF Dexron III may be used.

Automatic Gearbox:
Use ATF Dexron IID or Dexron III oil for refill or topping-up.

Transfer box:
Use Texaco Multi-Gear 75W/90R.

Front and rear axles:
Use Texaco Multi-Gear 75W/90R
."

But to be honest in general I reckon regular oil changes are more important than a particular type of oil.

Right! This oil business is messed up

I called a local Land Rover parts dealer and LR "specialist" ( :rolly: ) and they told me to use ATF3 (Dexron III to be exact) in Gearbox and W80-90 in transfer case and diffs.

I asked them if the W80-90 should be EP and they said "no"! I also stated that the Gearbox is a manual and they insisted on the ATF! Obviously they asked what car it is: Disco 1 1997-98, Manual.

Damn shait advise left, right and centre! I think he was looking at the D2 info instead of the D1 stuff.

Best advise and most logical advise is the advise above from you fellas: MTF94 (or Evo1 if available) in Gearbox with proper service intervals and EP 80w-90 to GL5 spec. for Transfer case and Diffs. with proper service intervals!
Do you guys think EP W85-140 is better for hotter climates?

The ATF advice for a D1 or D2 is just rubbish - the recommended fluid for all R380 gearbox applications is MTF94.

Re the rest - tranny box and diffs EP80w-90 for D1's and EP75w-90 for D2's. There is no official recommendation I've found for moving away from that in hotter climes.

AND I have recently filled my LT77 with MTF94 and it has not exploded, imploded, melted down, set on fire or turned into a collection of spare parts.

In fact, it's better than ever!

No more gearshift stiffening up after a long run on the motorway, plus geberally cleaner shifting :)
