So what the best oil to put in my Auto box 300tdi and what's best in the Transfer box money is not a Problem ..... I have just read this Thread and its spunk out haha

I use difflock evolution 1 and 2 fully synthetic in my r380 and transfer box. Have used it in my last 3 discos and a freelander. It's expensive but worth it I think. :0)

Have read this thread with interest, I have no idea which oil is in my gear box but it is very hard to select 2nd gear when cold, I read that some contributors report a transformation when changing to MTF94. I am considering doing the same but the previous owner had a rebuilt exchange gearbox installed by Ashcroft Transmissions Ltd only a few weeks before I bought my TD5 back in May. Would Ashcroft have used an alternative to MTF94?
Thanks
Stu

Had confirmation this morning that Ashcroft did indeed fill my gearbox with MTF94 I am left with no quick fix for my tricky second gear when cold. With winter here it is only going to get worse.

Have you got his receipt for the box and work ?

Is it worth an ask for them to 'look' at it ?

worm baulk rings dont fix themselves , some times certain oils like mtf94 can seem to improve gear changes ,sometimes fresh atf can , the same baulk rings are used in all r380s from p38 rr to disco and def 1 or 2, grooves worn in side of lower gear lever can also cause sticky or stiff changes as can poor selector yoke balls and sockets

The info I got from Ashcroft was that it is an issue with the viscosity of the oil when cold. The gear box was rebuilt in April so I hope it is not ware but I do have the invoice so will ask the question regarding a wear problem. As soon as the car has a few miles heat in it the gear change is as sweet as a nut. Trouble is I have to pull out from a side road onto a fairly busy road about 200m into any journey. A 10 second delay while trying to get 2nd gear is too long!

oil has to be scraped away from gear cone by baulk ring so that it can brake gear to match selector hub speed, 2nd has the greatest work to do so usually shows first
