Don't think any kind of grease in an R380 sounds good! It already has a rep for lube not getting to where it needs to, so anything thick risks clogging oil ways that aren't that brill to start with!
 
the biggest thing that wears gearboxes is not changing often enough ,both atf and mtf seem to lubricate similary, the little oil they hold gets contaminents and this goes round and get impregnated into bearings ,gears ,synchros etc ,lack of oil is common too ,most of the vehicles i service for the first time have very dirty oil and it doesnt matter how high the spec is if run contaminated ,
 
Recentley baught a 2002 td5 discovery and from cold gears could be notchy and difficult to get in especially second, so baught 3 ltrs of mtf94 and drained gearbox and it was like water is was that thin. Left it to drain for half hour and jacked nearside up to ensure all old oil was out, then filled her up with mtf94 took around 2.5 ltrs and the difference its made is unreal. Smooth gear changes even from cold. Stick with manufactures recommendation
 
I have a 200tdi, is the oil requirements for the LY77 the same as for R380?

My gears seem to have got tighter since I got the car (its only been on the road a couple of weeks) and I am wondering if the last thing the last owner did was to fill the gearbox with the wrong oil.

A TDi 200 with LT77 needs atf Dexron IID - you shouldn't use anything else in it, unlike the R380 box which should have MTF94 or atf.

Don't forget that there are 2 gearbox sump plugs on the LT77 - one normal one for taking out the majority of oil and a secondary one which lets out a small amount of oil but also has an oil strainer which should be carefully cleaned and reinstalled.

sorry to drag up an old thread guys but i want to change the oil in my 1995 manual 300tdi
and after reading this i'm still confused on whether to buy mtf-94 or difflock evo 1?
 
1. MTF94 (landrover recommended right?)
2. ATF (good old reliable)
3. EP90 (err)
4. "liquid grease" and EP90 mix (err... but all the farm 'rovers keep on going!)

Are his farm rovers doing proper driving and motorway miles?

I bet his gearchanges are hesitant.

MTF94 (which is pretty running stuff) or ATF ought to be used as the box has a pump, heavy oils don't run through the pump that well.
 
iv got dextron 2 in mine ad on cold running its abit of a night mare but once warm its ok..

iv got one of the silver syringe type oil pumps but find it abit w*&k if im honest, what do other people use as its in an awkward position especially on disco as no over head access...same for transfer box
 
I recently replaced the gear oil in my Td5 R380 from ATFIID to GL-4 75w85 (GS Caltex Lubricants)

I am aware that LR now recommends MTF94 but that is not available in my country. The shift is so much better and smoother with the GL-4, However just after replacing the oil I came across Honda MTF part# 08267-p9901zt1 and from the little info available I have gathered that this is also MTF 94... so the question is, should I replace the GL-4 tranny oil with this Honda MTF; let me add that the shift is perfect with the GL-4. It was very notchy with the ATF.

For your info you should never, ever use an EP 75w-85 oil in your main gearbox.

If you can't get MTF94 then use Dexron III atf. The fact that the shift quality is better now with the GL-4 oil may well be down just just putting in fresh oil.

I would never use a GL-4 75w-85 oil in the gearbox as it is too thick.

Heat build up will kill it faster than a ............. Use atf and as you said not avaible use the lightest motor oil 5w 30 or 10w30.

Okay then I would like to use the Honda MTF... would anybody have more info on this oil? Would it be okay to use it? Some places say it is MTF 94 but I can't be sure of that.

I don't want to go back to the ATF since I was never happy with the way it shifted. But if the Honda MTF is a no go then its the ATF i guess.
The GL-4 I drain from the gearbox, can it be used in my other car or would it be contaminated with the previous ATF in the system? If I understand correctly, TD5 R380 has a oil cooler and not all oil is drained?
