I’ve noticed a possible weird problem with my td5 discovery. When going up hills in a high gear for example 4th or 5th on a dual carriageway or motorway I’ve noticed if I have a run up then put my foot hard down the engine slowly looses revs until I have to change down. However if under the same scenario I feather the throttle the engine doesnt build revs but also doesn’t lose them. Is this a normal trait of the td5 and fly by wire throttle. I’ve had a lot of diesel cars and land rovers from old cable operated diesels to more modern than the td5 Diesel engines and they don’t behave the same way as the td5.

Any thoughts?

Never had anything like that on mine,

At a guess, I wonder if there is an issue with the wastegate modulator. Maybe bypass it and see what happens.

Can you get live diagnostics on it to see if anything strange is happening?

Cheers

Thanks for the reply. The wastegate modulator is already by passed, I’ve had live data in the maf and map and they are reading within the tolerances. Can’t remember the exact figures at present.
Brand new silicone hoses fitted and no leaks, no egr valve. Engine revs right up to 4500rpm on the flat in the lower gears. The engine does struggle to accelerate on the flat in 5th after 60mph. It does accelerate but probably takes about 10 seconds or so to go from 60-70mph which I put down to the amount of air the discovery has to push through at those speeds.

In lower gears it storms up hills no issue. I’ve done diagnostics on the throttle pedal and that’s working correctly. Cruise control all works fine. Performance on the flat I’m pretty happy with but some hills can be painful.

It’s a 1999 es discovery whether that makes any difference. It’s not been mapped at all. It’s got a boost gauge and I’ve looked at live data and know it’s not over boosting.

the MAP, engine temp and fuel temp readings when the symptom occurs would be very relevant in this case, what's the boost gauge showing then?...do you still have the EGR?

Egr has been properly removed. I’ve been playing with the boost to see if it helps but it hasn’t currently it’s at 19psi.

I have remembered that there was an intermittent fault code on injector 3 so i don’t know if the injector harness is on the way out

Then check the ECU red plug and if it's oil there replace the loom ASAP and keep cleaning the plugs once a week untill it ends up dry
