Fuel Lift Pump

What are the indicators for a buggered lift pump?

My 90 generally drives great, but every now and again I get a 'burst' of tapping/rattling for aprox 2 seconds then off, then on again dependent of engine load and speed - a bit like a tappet noise ( but I checked the tappets and there fine).

Been wondering if its my Lift Pump that's on the way out.

the lift pump is a very easy and cheap thing to change, and there's one way to see if your prognosis is correct

New pump fitted - all be it a Britpart one!

Landy is driving a lot smoother through the revs with it fitted, so the ol one was on its way ooot. Although that bloody metallic tapping noise is still there.

I can't find where the bugger is coming from- gone round the engine bay with a long socket extension and I can't here anything unusual.

The noise comes and goes - but is most noticeable when your foots off the gas - say going down a hill, and then I can here a series of 'taps' for about 2 second intervals, then back again after another 2 seconds or so.

You can also here it after the Landy has stopped , engine running, for minute or so then the tapping it will start.

I don't think it's doing anything to affect the drive - but it's doing my bloody head in.

The noise is very noticeable inside the cab, and appears to be coming from the back end of the engine/engine bay.

Had my tappets checked twice, and was told there fine.

Any thoughts? please

has the rigid clutch cable that runs along the top of the engine bay side of the bulkhead come loose ? - or something else that's loose and rattling on the bulkhead

Thing is it's a very metallic, rhythmical ( if that's the right word) tapping. Rather that a general rattle

dont dissmiss it being something loose and knocking on the bulkhead you'd be supprised how amplified small sounds can appear - and if you dont find it you may just have to get used to it or what until something breaks or falls off

Does it stop when you either:

Put your foot on the clutch

Put your transfer box in neutral??

Strange that it does it when stationery, normally something like that is commensurate with road or engine speed (mine has a slightly loose speedo cable i think which ticks at a rate depending on my speed!)
