New to this site so thought i'd introduce myself first, names George and just bought a 1998 Freelander XEDI (I am aware of the problems this vehicle has so no need to list them, say what a bad choice it was etc). does anyone have any experience on running this engine with veggie oil and if so what mix works best, what oil is best and does it need any mods first (i.e. adjust timing or increase injection pressure etc) any info will be appreciated and I will keep you posted as to how it's going.

Try doin' a search or ask Minge;)
Welcome tae the mad hoose BTW;) :D

Already done loads of searches and get plenty results for the Freelander but none of them specify whether they're talking bout the XEDI or the TD4.

Hiya George,
Gotta say, for an FL, bout the best choice you could have made, my XeDI's got to 161k without (too) many problems..

Seem to recall that you've got to be wary of the veggie eating away the rubber seals on the L type diesels, the TD4's got typical Kraut engineering, can run on veg no probs( think its summat BMW learnt with tank engines on the steppes in '41, having to run on vodka, kerosene, pig **** etc..):p

If yer look from here onwards http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/409496-post14.html and have a read on Ming's saga's here http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/vedgey-gaylander-31321.html

Yet again it's all about the TD4, doesn't anyone have an XeDI that's been run on veggie/dieso mix - there has to be at least one out there. I'm running a 20/80 veg/dieso at the moment but been less than a week so far, did take a little longer to start this morning (took about 5 seconds of cranking instead of instantly) but not noticed anything else yet. Going to change the filter after 1 month like this and maybe pull an injector to see what that's like and change the oil. I'll keep people posted of anything I find.

Hi George

I've run on 50/50 veg from time to time with no problems, Just to contradict Cashy I've read that the 'L' series seals are OK with Veg. I hear the problems start when you run on bad Bio which has still got methanol/ethanol in it. At the moment though it not worht the hassle of pouring it when you look at the shelf prices.

I think I need to research the seals a bit more. If the seals do go is it a new pump or can it be stripped and the seals replaced or - can the seals be replaced before failure with some that are resistant to veg oil? Also, as stated i will be testing my oil. I have the facility to test for viscosity, water content, insolubles and total base number. Does anyone know what limits there are for this engine?

Eyup Boxer, I'll blame Mingey for givin me duf info then...

S'probably due to this being [relatively] new tech stuff, prob only sur eway of finding out would to run a new 'L' GL from start with 50/50 and see what happens/breaks. Tend to agree wit yer line of fort tho, ethanol and rubber don't like each other much...

Knowing Landy George, you'll either have to a) buy a new pump or b) source the seals yersen. Be surprised if anyones got the figures above, wouldn't surprise me if Landrover haven't even tested for it...

I ran my old DI on about a 50% mix of oil in the sumer and droped down to 20 in the winter and had no bother at all

the TD4 however I am at 10% and daren't go much higher untill i get an all clear (i still owe money on it) as it says not to use biodiesel in the book.

BUT

where can you get vegie from now?

asda morisons tesco etc all now at £1/ litre and the old tesco offer on pura oile 56p/ litre is no longer around (plus it is gon straight away eaven with a max buy of 6 litres at a time)

I can get veggie for about 90p per litre so its still working out 27p cheaper, not a lot but i like the idea of running on [fuel]tax free, green(?) fuel.:)

cant say much about freelander but a guy a work is running 40% rapeseed oil 60% derv in his rover 220 turbo (same motor?) sees happy enough especially as its free as a left over from use in a cake factory cheap motoring and fat guts just need free beer now!

Cashy Don't drop me init with Ming he 's an alien he has a Raygun and he likes SRV so he must be OK.

Well, so far so good with the veggie oil. Haven't changed the oil yet so haven't tested it but I'm running on about 80/20 veggie/dieso now with no apparent problems. No dodgy exhaust smoke, no loss of power and no starting problems even when the weather was a bit cold. I'll post soon with more info after the oil change.

Still going strong on the veggie oil. Using it straight of the shelf from Asda. I haven't had any noticeable contamination of the lub oil, when i took a sample it seemed to be what was expected from an engine running on dieso. Couldn't pull the injectors (more like they were very tight and didn't want to break the injection pipes).
Had two problems so far:

1. Flattened the battery one morning when trying to start, problem lay in a couple of faulty glow plugs. Changed them and no problems since.
2. Suffered a blocked fuel line. This is what I would have expected, however , I thought it would have gotten as far as the filter - I must have had a very dirty fuel system. Veg oil will actually clean out your fuel lines/tank/sender etc and there is the likelyhood you will suffer a blocked filter when all the crap comes out. After the filter change everything is Ok cos all the crap is now gone.

If anyone out there knows of a cheap source of veggie oil in PO13 area let me know. Asda were cheap but have now raised the price tp £1.19 a litre.

Going to try some cetane booster to see if I can increase the misture from yhe 80/20 veg/dieso to closer to 95/5.

Hi George, Glad all is going well, I have a 98 XEDI too and as diesel is now £1.31 I'm thinking about turning to veg oil.. I have read a few threads on this and my main concern was the fuel pump. Have you had any problems with your fuel pump, I'm guessing as we both have a 98 xedi we should have the same make model pump? is it really as simple as go to asda buy the cheapest veg oil and wack it in and remember to change the oil filter in a few months time?

Tiny is a 98 XEDI and has been running very happily on veg oil for over 3 years now (80/20 mix veg/derv). She is currently pushing the 170,000 mile mark so fear not - get the chips out!
I usually change to 50/50 if the weather has a cold snap and 100 derv in the bleak mid winter with no probs.
Asda oil has gone through the roof so I have switched to Netto (90p per litre) and more recently I have been harrassing a mate who has a wholesale card to get me 20 litre drums for £16. You have to shop around ;)

I have just found the same kind of friend, he can get 20ltr for £16 from Makro.

And yes it is that simple. The Xedi has a single distributer type fuel pump made by bosch which is ideal for veggie oil, you will get no problems from this pump. The only problem I have found when going above 80/20 veg/dieso is starting problems on a morning. I've just been playing with a 90/10 to 95/5 mix and flattened my battery a couple of times. I'm going back to the 80/20 mix as I had no problems there. The starting problems are due to the design of the engine, direct injection is know for cold start problems on veggie oil.
With regards to the filter, it's the fuel filter that clogs due to the crap in the tank and lines being removed. This is a very easy job, i've actually fitted an extra inline clear type filter so i can see what is blocking it and it's only 70p to change rather than £15. If this filter cloge when on a journey it can be removed and I just use the original single filter.

For your piece of mind, and boost your confidence in the idea (cos it can feel a bit strange when putting veggie ol in your tank for the first time), go for a 50/50 mix and work up from there.
Any questions post here and I'll try and answer them.

Great thanks, I meant fuel filter :D How many miles should i leave it before changing the filter for the 1st time? and then how often do you think it will need changing (I only do about 6000 miles a year)
right i'm off to find a mate with a makro card
