Yes I know, round ones, black ones, rubber ones, ones with tread on, 335 85 R17

The trouble is now, so many people have answered the dreaded and perennial Freelander tyre question with 'search it yourself you lazy git' that when you search it you get lots of old threads with very little useable info in it.

Just sayin'


Now...

I is lookin' to replace me 225 55 R17s wiff somefin' a bit more wintererererery.... I would hope either 60 profile would fit... but after 354 days of searching on LZ I am unsure.... but meanwhile what ATs are available.

I don't think you'll get a consensus opinion (other than General Grabbers AT and AT2 are noisy) - so you choose the tread pattern you fancy and pays your money and revel in the brilliant choice you've just made ;)

I'm still prevaricating on this very topic, and haven't yet found a solution... too many choices and the tyre ranges change every year!

To narrow things down - what is your budget for the black round things?

I stuck General Grabber AT2 on my slitty - I've done a few k on them and they're fine.

The trouble is finding a choice in the sizes for a Freelander.

What size have you found that you believe fits, something sub 335 85 would be good to ensure they can spin around.

My brother has AT2's on his cherokee and he finds em quite noisy, also they seem prone to grumble between 50-60mph . Personally i don't think they're bad but then i'm used to insa dakars howling away in my 90 so a jcb feels like a smooth quiet drive to me. :)

17" are a tad too large for a freelander unless you want a pose value with rubber bands - or - even worse - to paint them black and add rubber bands (a sign of delusion) ;)
there are many choices in 16".... avon A/T are superb.

ON 17" - you are really looking at rubber bands that will alter the gearing and give you a cr&p ride overall.

Sell the 17" to a total poser with a mental age of about 12 and get some 16" units.:rolleyes:
 
Yes, OP, I agree. I don't like the 'ever heard of Google?' way of answering threads. It's unhelpful and not in the spirit of these forums. In the time it takes to post that, they could have written a brief answer, or not bothered at all. They're just filling the LZ servers with grumpy, discourteous non-information.

A mate of mine has Hankook Dynapro MTs on his hippo - noisier than roadies but fine just for the winter and they do look the part.

EDIT: I agree with Joe_H that if you want a real off-road set-up, 17" rims are too big. Too vulnerable to getting smashed by rocks.

My 55 plate comes with 17" alloy rims OEM. They'll do for day to day driving.

I'm not looking for serious off road capability TBH. I have use of off road tyres on various vehicles that I have either owned or have daily use of from BFG MTs, Cooper, G Grabber, Michelin through to Insa Sahara, turbo yadder yadder yadder.... I'm not trying to replicate those, otherwise I would drive a trattor. :p

I just want to find some tyres with an reasonable AT pattern that will fit on the corners of Gayla.......errr... ahem Freelander. I have no intention of laning with it but there are unmade tracks that I access and living at around 1500 feet so the roads around here get more snow and ice than anywhere else in the southwest. I don't want winter tyres, through choice, but would like something with an all terrain pattern that has some availability.

A profile increase from 55 to 60 shouldn't have too much detrimental effect?

I just wondered what other folk have experience of, there must be plenty of FLs out there with these 17inch rims.
 
I've got Maxxis Bravo AT 771 in 225/60/17 on my SE. They are larger in overall diameter than the more common factory size of 215/65/16 ;)
It would take a 235/60/17 or a 225/65/17 without clearance problems.

Going by my current 225 Maxxis ATs. A 235 will be a tight fit between the inner side wall and strut. There's about 8mm of gap with my 225's. So going to 235 could conceivably reduced the gap to 3mm.
Hight wise, there's plenty of room for a 65% 225 Maxxis Bravo AT.
 
lol, funny how "a bit more wintererererery" get interpreted as competing in X Games Rock Climbing!

I took my GT Radial MaxMilers to 3,185 feet on Monday - perfect traction and never missed a beat. Huge slabs of 80 profile rubber driving 2 wheels on a sealed road in the pouring rain. Best I can offer I'm afraid.

I am though now seriously considering painting my wheels black.

Meanwhile I has found some Bridgestone D687 225 65 R17 at very competitive price, I'll have you know.

I am now posting this in the parish banns for a couple of days to see if anyone in LZ, or otherwise, knows of any lawful, or mechanical, impediment as to why these here, afore mentioned, Bridgestones should not be fitted. Size, fitting and general crapness will all be taken into account.

For what it is worth, I am increasingly leaning towards the Maxxis 771s that Nodge is using. They look very good. I am also very tempted to get a set of 16" Modular wheels - not that I need them, but the look transforms the car... :)

16x7 Modular wheels seem pretty affordable from the usual sources too :D
 
By 'transform' do you mean look bu993red about with 'Carlos Fandango stylee' ? :D

I can feel a Hamlet moment coming on.

I've been through all that with a 3" lift, two sets of modulars for hoofing great knobblies and another set of even more hoofing great lumps...etc etc etc.... My Disco had modulars, my 110 had modulars... if you start whamming up the profile too far the car corners like a pig on a pogo stick.

I just want some ATs on me Gayla...... errr ahem, Freelander. :)
 
Thanks Nodge, I've just had a look at a few photos. The MT version looks very much like an Insa Turbo Sahara.

I'm gonna see what my local tyre fitters can get them for.

When I last looked at ATs I read a lot of reviews and came to the conclusion that Bridgstone Duelers were the best (for me). That was for my Disco though and it expired before I had a chance to buy them - and they were quite expensive at the time. I haven't done the same research for the Freelander. I believe @htr has them on his Freelander and although for most of the year he's climbing dusty tracks in them, he does live in and has a long alpine commute to work so will probably have seen a fair bit of snow.

The road I was on on Monday was the Lindis Pass. Its the route from the North into the "Southern Playground" here in NZ that is the Queenstown/Wanaka area. A NZ tourism website has pics of it looking like this...

However, when we drove down on Saturday, it didn't look much like that! I put a coupe of pics up on this thread....

I didn't take any pics coming back on Monday. However, I did take the following pic. If you look at the map in the pic above and come South from the marker that shows the Lindis, you first pass the turn off to Wanaka, then carry on down to a T junction. Turning West at that junction takes you to Queenstown, but at that junction is a town called Cromwell which is the hometown for @htr and I took this pic within 1km of his house right by that junction. You can see the road coming down the East (right in pic) side of the lake, which is Lake Dunstan...

The mountains on the West (left) of the pic are the Crown Range. The Crown Range is the home for the Cardrona Ski field (among others) and also the Southern Hemisphere Proving Ground - their website is well worth a click http://www.shpg.co.nz/ - LR send prototypes down here for testing . @htr's commute takes him through a pass at the end of that range, so I'm sure he will have seen snow in winter!
