"Saint" Dann, agree that forums are a slow way to communicate, but it does force people to go away and solve problems themselves in-between posts rather than depending completely on your patience and experience. If they (we) could Skype you I doubt you'd ever get a spare moment.

I was just about to buy a handle in the UK and get it posted out (1/2 the local price) and I realised at the last moment there is a difference in part numbers.

UK is: CXB102420LDA but AU is: CXB102440LDA

Close but different.....any idea how I could find out what the difference is? (i.e. somewhere else I could post where they are familiar with these things?) it could just be a badge or something ...

Made some enquiries and although they say they are different nobody can tell me the difference (bizarre!) I wonder if it's just the microswitch that's different?. Can't you get one from a breakers yard (the one good thing about petrol engined Flanders is that lots end up prematurely in breakers yards so lots of cheap bits for TD4s)

Do you have 'find a part' within Oz. They send your query to breakers who then contact you direct?

How about putting up a new post e.g. Wanted:Oz spec tail door handle.?

Re the 'Skype' idea: I was thinking in terms of arranging time slots so folks could set up the webcam etc at the vehicle ready to go as it were?

Anyhow I hope some of that was helpful. Cheers & beers. Dann..

Dann, I've got one organised, but had to pay $200 which is currently around 100 pounds - and this is from a wrecker, news ones in the UK are 70-80 pounds whereas new ones here are 190 pounds. I should put some serious thought into re-selling LR stuff from the UK, last year I had to replace the VCU and was quoted $2000 locally for a unit and eventually shipped one from the UK for $600 (including shipping!)!

The Skype/Webcam idea will probably work well in the UK but you'll find latency issues will make the video/voip a bit choppy to Oz. Roundtrip latancy in the UK will be <100ms but >600ms to Oz so thinks get a bit weird, lots of people talking over each others etc.

Beers and beers. Mark

Part in and its working! I also worked out the reason why it was so hard to diagnose - as well as the handle on the micro-switch being broken, the connector to the solenoid was also intermittently faulty - probably caused by me sticking meter probes into it. This explains why I was seeing voltage across it but the solenoid not firing.

I should have realised that if the 'debugging' was giving incoherent results then you are almost certainly looking at more than one fault - something I learned years ago in my software writing days.

Dann, thanks a million again, I feel like a freelander back door expert now so if anyone else needs help, fire away!

Hi Mark
Can I suggest that you put up a new post as a precis of the whole episode with a title that will pop-up easily in searches e.g 'Freelander tail door jammed and now fixed'

Mods may even make it a 'sticky' or put it in 'Common Q&As'

Cheers, beers and good luck.D..

Hey, I'm new on here, been trying to work out why my tailgate window won't drop, reading through all the different posts on the dreaded and familiar issue... Have read this thread with great interest and increasing admiration - for tenacity, inventiveness, the kindness of one person whose been there trying to help another. And then I'm afraid I laughed out loud at the appalling injustice of having solved the whole saga only to rip the door handle off with a bin! SO unfair!

All the best -

Kat
