Freelander 1 td4 Strange coolant leak. Suggestions please

Started losing coolant about 3 weeks ago. It's never overheated and there's no contamination in the oil or the expansion tank. There are the usual small cracks on the tank around where the cap goes but having cleaned the bottle, i can not see a trace of coolant there. I've checked the pipes and both floor wells and no moisture of any kind. It has got worse since i found it (about a cup full per day). The engine bay is clean and dry too. Any suggestions as to where a beginner should begin to look. Thanks
 
First off replace the coolant tank, as they are cheap, and it'll only get worse. Cracks means it can't hold pressure correctly, which will affect its ability to retain the coolant.

The other common leak points are top hose outlet pipe, below the inlet manifold, and the bypass pipe O ring at the thermostat joint.
 
check the Y section bolted to the head the seal can fail, so can the Y as it gets brittle over time, remove the manifold to check deposits of red coolant,

When you say strange leak, it's not leaking back in, is it? :D
The best tool I've found is a pressure tester, not the cheapest item in the toolbox, but let's you pressurise the system while the engine is cold. No burnt fingers and any small leaks don't evaporate.
 
Thanks for all the suggestions and pics too. I've got a replacement for the coolant tank coming monday. What are the hose clips called that you use with pliers on the pipes going in to the tank? Thanks again
 
That's the ones. Gonna get a couple of those in, just in case the others break while i'm changing the tank. Just googled what you put to be sure. Cheers
 
It looks like it's coming from the top or bottom of the coolant tank. I noticed this when i took a couple of photos... Will changing the tank solve it and is there a seal or something that goes at the bottom? Thanks again

Right so I've replaced the tank and it seemed to go ok. Just a couple of questions.
1/ The bottle fits fine but was surprised that there's no real way of securing it besides the twist in to place and the plastic screw. Is that Left?
2/ The plastic screw on the left hand side is a mess It's the 2 part thing that it screws in to. What are they called and where do i get one from? Looked on google but without a name for it I'm flummoxed. Thanks again

Not sure what you are describing, but is it a scrivet?

I know LR used those in the bumper/valance/grill.
 
Hi thanks. I've looked on line at what you put and it's exactly that thanks. There's only one scrivet holding the tank in place and the one in has seen way better days.

You can by huge packets of general car trim fixings on Amazon for just a few £, which contain all the common sizes and designs.
I bought a huge bag of 1200 different items, a few years ago, and I'm sure it'll last me another decade. Definitely worth the small outlay, and I've had to delve in to that bag more often than I thought I would.
