Not really, the weights are crap from any fitters (true) the bead leak was caused by a patch of corrosion on the rim.(Well the silly fookers shoulda sorted it!)

These guys work fast, four tyres fitted and balanced in under an hour is going it some and that was including chatting to me.(Anything over 20 mins is a bit pedestrian if you ask me)

Is there anything else I'm going to need to buy (other than wheels and tyres) considering i'm switching a 300Tdi disco from Freestyle alloys to 16x7 modulars?

Spacers? Wheel nuts? Anything else? Or are they just a straight swap?

And what about the spare wheel carrier on the back door? Will that cope with a 16x7 modular?

Also, I think you need to take the engine and gearbox out to fit the new wheel nuts as they are different. I believe you also have to take the half shafts out and replace them with bananas and change the gear knob for an apple. The swivel balls get changed for pumpkins and both prop shafts get replaced with cucumbers. A chocolate doughnut always lasts longer when you lift the vehicle than the rubber one so you may as well replace that also. To top it all off, you may as well do the mod to the radio aerial which is best done with an old steel coat hanger.

The reason I'm asking now instead of waiting until the day on which I have time to change them over is because I can order some at the same time and save on delivery costs without having to place a separate order just for wheel nuts!

You guys may have more money than me, but saving £3 here and £7 there really makes a difference to me! Justifying owning this land rover (which i love!) is quite hard at times...

Get some Steel wheel nuts matey the tapers are different where the nut hits the wheel on an alloy wheelnut they are curved. The steel wheelnut has a straight taper.

I know i'm a paranoid old sod, but my lack of knowledge gets me stung from time to time and I cannot afford to be stung these days!

How about spacers etc... can I juat take the alloys off and put the 16x7 modulars on, or will I need wheel spacers etc...?

If you needed spacers then one of us would have said so..........

The early type alloy nuts had 90 degree ends, because it was the shoulder of the nut that secured the alloy.

Later type alloy nuts have a taper end so that the same nuts can be used to secure the steel spare.

Yours being a 300 will probably have late nuts, so you would technically be able to fit the modulars.

But it will look a bit gay.

right - wheels & tyres arrived and fitted! Made a good deal with paddocks in the end.

new wheel nuts (and locking ones) fitted too. Very happy! ...despite the expense, of course!

Anyway... the locking wheel nut won't go on the spare wheel carrier because the stud is too long... I could either drill the end of the locking wheel nut out, hacksaw the end of the stud off or get hold of some other type of locking wheel nut.

Obviously, I can make the decision as to whether to hacksaw the end off or drill the nut out, but does anyone know if there are any locking wheel nuts out there for steel wheels which will fit on a Disco 1 spare wheel carrier?

Or you could maybe bung some washers under the head of it to take up the slack?

That's the way to do it

I had a turned piece of steel on mine that I tacked onto the nut in the end and that worked also, but the washers will be fine!!

only marine grade steel is good enough for a land rover, of course!

and i've had a better idea... (I think)... instead of using a load of washers, i've put a normal wheel nut in there instead. If you try and turn the normal wheel nut, it won't turn the locking wheel nut, it'll kinda act as a locking nut for the locking wheel nut if that makes sense! (Paddock sent me 20 nuts when I only needed 18, so I now have one spare too

OK... that is true. Here's the info...

The cheapest place around here (by a large number of £££ - 18% cheaper than the cheapest place I've known for my whole life!) for tyres was Saxon Gate Motorist Centre at Biggleswade near Bedford (01767 314011). Very helpful chap and unbelievably cheap!

However, given that I needed a new set of normal wheel nuts plus a set of locking wheels nuts as well, Paddock Spares came out at exactly the same price (within a fiver anyway) and I didn't have to drive there!

Paddocks did not have 245/75R16 tyres on their web site, so I phoned up, spoke to Darryl and asked if they'd like to put a "package deal" together for me... they said yes.

So...

4x 245/75R16 GT Adventuro Mud Terrain tyres fitted, valved & balanced to 4x black steel 16x7" modular rims + 1 extra black steel 16x7" modular rim + box of 20 wheel nuts + box of 5 locking wheel nuts

TOTAL: £560 inc. Delivery and VAT.

Obviously I jacked the vehicle up and changed them all over, and my local tyre place swapped the spare tyre onto the new rim free-of-charge.
