I was going to say that

well... i'm a paranoid novice - and not asked the question yet! i've asked many other stupid questions, but not this one yet :D

Anyway... thanks for the eBay links!

The one you linked to was £15.52 including postage, so I've had a look around and found a Silverline one for £5.79 including postage! :D

See here: 500cc CAR GEARBOX OIL SUCTION HAND GUN PUMP | eBay

That should be just as good, hopefully.

Now to find a good motor factors who can sell me all the necessary fluids!

All fluids were last checked and topped up 7,000 miles ago, so the levels should still be good.

Anyway, just to confirm, what I'll need is:

- Engine oil (have gallons of that already)
- Auto gearbox - ATF Dextron IID (9.1 litres)
- Diffs - EP90 (3.4 litres [1.7 litres for each diff])
- Transfer box - EP90 (2.3 litres)
- Power steering fluid - ATF Dextron IID (3.4 litres)
- Swivel balls - EP90 (0.7 litres [0.35 litres for each swivel])

So, in total, I need:

12.5 litres ATF Dextron IID
6.4 litres EP90

right?

Obviously, if the power steering fluid still has a nice cherry red colour to it and smells normal, there's no need to change it.

Also, given that both swivel balls have had a one-shot in them, should I just take out the level plug and filler plug and fill with EP90 until it slowly comes out of the level plug anyway or will that potentially over-fill them? If so, how on earth do I check the level of the one-shotted swivel balls?!?

If you've used a one shot in the swivel balls it would have been a grease maybe? Just take the plug off the top and keep pumping the grease in till it blows out the top. If EP90 is used then just fill to the top. People tend to use grease now as it is a little more happy staying in with worn seals.

Axles you just fill up till overflow too.

As for the pumper thing for getting oil in. Just go to the doctors for an enema and ask for a spare pumper:eek:

one shot means just that.

put one sachet in each swivel, done.

no need to top up unless you ever lose any, ie by having amajor leak and/or stripping down the swivel etc.

once the grease is in there it is maintenance free because is doesnt apparently degrade or leak away.

cheers

washing up bottle is a good idea! thanks for that, storm!

Yes - the swivel balls are filled with one-shot grease. I have been told in the past not to overfill stuff as you can blow oil seals, so is it really OK to fill up the swivel balls until it comes out of the top-most filler plug?

As for also filling the axles until they overflow, do you mean the diffs or is there something else to fill up that nobody's mentioned yet?

And are my quantities that I need to purchase correct and of the correct fluids?

Yes I do mean the diffs. 1/2" plug out top first then drop oil out bottom plug. Fit bottom plug then re-fill from top plug until overflowing.

All I did with my swivels is keep pumping the grease in until it came out the top.

Never fill anything with oil to the top as oil expands when it gets hot so it will exit via the weakest link which is usually a seal or broken breather.

If you want to see an interesting sight, fill your engine to the top of the rocker cover with oil..... we did it to an oil tranny engine and what a laugh that was :D

jamesmartin: so the 6 litres of EP90 will be enough for everything even though the capacities in the workshop manual add up to 6.4 litres?

Also, will 3 litres of ATF Dextron IID really be enough for everything even though the capacities in the workshop manual add up to 12.5 litres? are you sure?

matthew2riches: thanks for the advice - the diffs will be filled to the brim with EP90 and the swivel balls will be filled to the brim with one-shot grease.

Don't forget to grease all the nipples you can find. Just found both my UJ's are ****ed on the front prop today. I reckon they're dried up inside lol, the nipples had bent went I got it so I left them until they expired - and today was the day that happened  Still, no great loss. Thought it was a CV at first but I was lucky

yeah, I plan on greasing everything I can as well, and changing the oil filter and fuel filter, of course :D

Just need to finalise the quantities of fluids I need and whether the fluids I'm going to order are the right ones in the first place!

I'm still kinda broke, you see, so placing two orders is less than ideal and driving around trying to find stuff is less than ideal, so I need to place one order and get it spot on really!

I know ya did, James, but the quantities were confusing... in the manual they added up to 6.4 litres of EP90 (but you said I only needed 6) and 12.5 litres of of ATF (but you said I only needed 3!). didn't sound quite right to me...

matthew2riches - good idea... to hell with trying to choose quantities - if I make sure I buy too much, it'll be cheaper in the long run and i'll definitely have enough!

So... last question... if I put EP90 into the diffs & transfer box, ATF Dextron IID into the auto gearbox and power steering reservoir & one-shot grease into the swivel balls, will everything be good?

doesn't take long? everyone always says that... but i can't believe removing part of my chassis is a quick job... changing the rear prop shaft doughnut took me 3 hours, for example and it's only 10 bolts! lol
