right... an update on the stupid cyclone breather saga...
the bolts jamesmartin sent me both push in and pull back out of the hole in the engine block.
The O ring jamesmartin sent me will go onto the breather (it's a bit stretched though), and sits very proud of the breather surface. To get it to go into the hole it would need several screwdrivers around it to force it in. There's no way it'll push in by itself. I know it's supposed to be a tight fit, but two hands just isn't enough to force it in.
Therefore, the breather is still hanging off the side of the engine.
I borrowed an M6 bolt from work, and it does screw into the hole a little better, but it's a bit wobbly until it's 4 or 5 turns in. This suggests that the thread is starting to go in the engine block. It has definitely not been tapped out to M8, for example.
So... I phoned Marshall's Land Rover here in Cambridge. They can sell me an O ring (for comparison), part number
LLO100000, but they don't keep the bolts in stock, so i'd have to buy a pack of 5, part number
FB106111L.
Plus, i'd have to drive there to order them, and then drive there again to pick them up.
So... i'm kinda stuck again. This is not a difficult problem, but it does seem to be for me.
I don't really have the money to buy a pack of bolts from screwfix just to see if they fit, nor do I have a clue how to get the O ring on. I don't have any PTFE tape either, although I guess I could buy some. I'm paranoid about it ending up inside the engine though, rather than wrapped around the O ring slot.
So... I'm not after advice necessarily, just giving an update.
I will get this breather reattached eventually...
