Make sure you have enough oil.

Apparently it takes 5.8l, and i'll need 0.85 litres extra if i'm draining it and re-filling. So if I buy 7 litres, I should have enough. Cutting it a bit close though, so i'll probably buy either 8 or 10 litres, whatever makes sense at the time.

If it's not been off for a while, the filter can be a bitch to get off, my first change took four hours, three of which was trying to get the damn filter off. Second service took 90 minutes.

The oil and filter were last changed on 12 Apr 2010 (10 months)/11,000 miles ago. I've let it overrun quite a lot this time, but i've been spending a lot of my money of doing other stuff! I intend on doing it every 6,000 miles or twice a year, roughly (spring and autumn)!

Are you doing tranny and box? If so get the right oil in the right box :)

Transfer box oil was topped up and all other fluid levels were checked and were fine when it went in for the wheel bearings the first time. The transfer box took a litre or two, worryingly, but it's not leaking, so I assume the previous owner didn't bother with it. Everything else is fine! It's an auto gearbox, so i'm not touching the ATF. it still has just the right amount in it, and it's a nice cherry red and smells as it should.

Buy a 25l drum instead of little bits, saves loads of money and it's sitting there next time you fancy doing an oil change.
 
ok... so where can I buy a 25l drum of the right oil for a 300Tdi? (which i assume is 10W40, mineral oil - NOT synthetic, right?)

agricultural suppliers. eg you're nearest tractor dealer, plenty of them in cambridgeshire ;)

10w40 mineral is what I use and never had any probs at all.
 
oh god, i've started an oil discussion!!!!!!!!!!!! didn't mean to do that.

some people swear by semi-synthetic, others by pure mineral.

i'm guessing it doesn't really matter, as long as it's 10W40, right?
 
bloody hell! £7/litre for cheap stuff and £10/litre for expensive stuff! Admittedly that's halfords prices for Castrol oils, but a 25 litre drum is gonna cost a fortune.

I admit it'll save money in the long run, but a 25 litre drum from Halfords would cost between £175 and £250 at that rate!

Oil can't be that expensive, can it?!?
 
Ah'll probably kick mesel' fur this:doh:.... But nobody has mentioned tryin' to undo filler plug furst. It's no use drainin' yer oils if ye can't undo the filler plug;)

unless i'm mistaken, isn't the "filler plug" the oil cap on top of the cylinder head? the big yellow one that you undo by hand? I know that comes off.........
 
transfer, gearbox, axles were all done by the garage a couple of weeks ago... so i know they're good now :D

and thanks for the link MHM! Durham's a bit far to travel for that particular container, but gives an idea for how cheap oil can be! :D

as for my local tractor dealer, they sell john deere stuff and i'm told by a friend that 15W40 doesn't typically go into john deere tractors, so they'll have to order it in most likely...

maybe i should just go to my local indy LR dealer with a large container and buy some out of his bulk tank if he'll sell it to me (assuming he has a bulk tank, of course).
