Threw myself under the Hippo, with the intention of swapping the gearchange setup to get rid of the sloppyness:

But it turns out the whole rod setup is actually fine, and it's where the rollpin fits into the gearbox itself. The pin is solid in the rod, but sloppy as buggery in the gearbox
Going to see how hard the material is in the gearbox rod, to try and drill it out, to take a nut+bolt. Got a few spare PG1 boxes to play with
I also thought the clutch release arm would be partially seized in the gearbox, due to how awkward it is to get the damned thing to release. Nope - there's a buttload of air in the thing. Yay..
On the good side - plenty of space for the supercharger
