P38A Faultmate extreme

Just my tuppence.....

I had a similar issue with a serial to USB converter the other day and it was actually a setting for the device itself in Device Manager (Windows 10). This screenshot is relevant to my converter and will probably be different to others but it might be worth checking for similar settings.

The highlighted box wasn't enabled by default but once the RS-485 checkbox was enabled everything started working.

RS485 is not the same as RS232 and the Faultmate is likely to require RS232, the EAS software certainly does.

It was more a case of checking that the device in device manager wasn't missing a setting.

Just finishing lunch and will give that ago, if you hear of reports of UFO's seen over the Wirral it will be a low flying laptop trailing a Faultmate.

Try using a freeware program called CoolTerm... https://freeware.the-meiers.org
"CoolTerm is a simple serial port terminal application (no terminal emulation) that is geared towards hobbyists and professionals with a need to exchange data with hardware connected to serial ports such as servo controllers, robotic kits, GPS receivers, microcontrollers, etc."

I've had to use this program on my Mac and PC (Win8 & 10) to aid in connecting to Serial to USB cables for my multimeter, oscilloscope, Arduino projects and my older music equipment.

With Win 10 it should work without any outside help if the USB to serial adapter is compatible and the correct driver is installed, in fa ct with a new adapter on Win 10, I did not even need to install a driver, it was plug and play.

Morning all, Thanks for all the helpful posts.I went on the BBS website and watched one of their videos yesterday.my Faultmate in stand alone mode does not operate as per the video.I'm thinking some damage may have occurred through wires shorting when I used the original lead that came with the unit.Bought second hand from a member I'm sure it was sold in good faith.Stay safe.

Send it to BBS for repair, but start saving up they work expensively. It maybe cheaper to buy a Nanocom and a couple of access codes.

The Fautmate software can be corrupted bu removing power when it's not on the home page.

Same back to you and yours. We are fine, Sue is going stare crazy being at home, she wants to do the garden/patio but getting plants and compost etc is a bit difficult. Lad has started to clean out garage, the scrap piled up is enormous, so things are more tidy in garage but a bloody nightmare all around it.

Yep Nanocom is same, never start engine with it switched on. Always switch Nanocom off, start engine then switch Nanocom back on, or it can cause problems.

Another half acre of grass to cut this afternoon. Trying to do a Click & Collect order this morning, the software is aimed at the snowflake generation with lots of pretty pictures to scroll through but no decent word search

Lad brought her some stuff the other day. Normally she spends hours at garden centres but if she goes out and gets infected then gives it me i am a goner. So she is playing safe.

Thanks Keith, that's the later wiring where pin 8 is unsoldered from pin6 and resoldered to pin1.

That is the cable that came with mine so should be correct.
Get on o the BBS owners forum and ask about the problem.
