Well she is finally home.
I need to take her roof off before she will fit in garage and then I'll be drawing up a plan of action and i guess starting a project thread.

Several photos below, not sure if they shed anymore light in its history, but once the log book is back I'll send off a V555 (think thats what its called) and see what turns up.

Anyone know what the thing is with shaft and gear on it?
Found it in the tub?

it looks like someone may have been attempting to build a gokart, looks to be a rear axle of some form going by the pillow block bearing and brake disc that is visible, that also looks to be a large sprocket on it with a hub on the very end

If that dark blue paint is original (looking at the inside of the cab it isn't) I would have said RAF, but to be honest the 88 registration date makes me think breakdown truck, as they were only required to have their own registration numbers from 1988. Prior to that they had run on trade plates. The red paint would also maybe suggest a wrecker...
The number plate is a valueless age related plate and probably not transferrable, JSU is a scottish reg, the kind of thing they issue in recent years on re-registations and such. Very, very few numberplates are ever worth two grand...

I see the Tdi notion has been raised again. First question would be is there anything wrong with the 2286 petrol in there? They are pretty bomb proof and will probably run even now. The one in my 88 had been sat since 1993, still turned and we got it to run easily enough and found it ran quite sweetly.
Many people just drop in a Tdi and be done, but really thought should also be given to upgrades to the brakes and probably the rear axle on an early 88 due to the weaker half-shafts. Chassis mounts will also need cutting and moving. Every step taken is one step away from the original vehicle, and at the moment, aside from the wheels and paint, it does look very original. Also, don't kid yourself that you will refit the petrol "one day" I have heard this thousands of times over the years and nobody has done so yet...

I would say the shaft thingy is part of a circular saw set up. I would agree with the suggestion that it may be ex forces by virtue of the interior paint colour. Possibly RN but maybe RAF but its only a guess. I would say you have scored a beauty there. Good luck with the resto'.

those bull bars are becoming rare now and it looks good in condition, as for the paint work, the only way you will really know if it's orginal would be to gently scrape off the red paint. atleast it would look alright and half decent. very nice truck mate i like it. and dont part that rare sun visor. will the engine be getting changed?

GOOD LUCK MATE and keep the photo's coming. this one i will be watching
