hi guys..

i am going to wales (happy valley) new year... doing some greenlanes with some m8s.

I am a greenlane virgin and am toying with the idea of putting steering/diff guard on my 110.... but my machanic said not to bother... (makes his job harder lol)

What are you oppinionson essentials for greenlanes???

Dont think we will be doing anythink to extreem.

Have sorted tyres... insa turbo special track!

What sort of green laning are you thinking about............

my way of thinking is if you need Special Tracks for what your doing you will need steering guards and diff guards....... thats of course your just tring to make your landy look a bit more capable rather then for whatyour using it.... Its supprising what you can do on road tyres or All Terians.....

not looking to do anythink to extreme... special tracks mainly due to them being cheap lol... £60 each from john craddock.

Have seen some pics from the route we will be taking so defo going to get a steering guard.

Ive done lots of lanes around happy valley and never hit my diff guards on rocks etc.

In fact the only time ive hit the diff guard is on strata, and that was in a big puddle and i couldnt see what was in it obviously!

You know what they say though, if you dont have em ull need them.

For the cost of diff guards, id get some! i think there around £20 for a pair.

The only other thing you need for happy valley is to stay on the CORRECT path at the top and take a camera if its a nice day.

There is 2 schools of thought.

My take on it Fit a guard and get hooked up on everything and carry more weight and put up with it in the way when doing repairs. Or Do not fit anything don't do anything stupid and avoid stuff that will damage your mota. Or fit HD arms.

Me I ave done my fair share of trialling. I did uprate my track rod as it does bend easily when doing modified type trials. But RTV normal stuff theyre usualy ok. NEVER have I not got home because of a bent arm or track rod. I have bent 1 std drag link in 10 years. Track rods bend all the time but never failed to get me home.

I hit a concrete bollard that was on a climb out of a bombhole hidden by long grass. This was a direct hit and it was a hard hit 2nd low gear about 10mph competing in a local CCV comp. I still got home! The disadvantage of weight and being hungup on a low steering guard is by far outweighed by having more clearance.

I have fitted HD arms £90 from paddocks but this is because I run bigish tyres and like to take part in local and national comps. I like HD arms. Your Mechanic to be sounds like he is talking sense and may have some real competition experience behind him. plenty of winch trucks have them bolted on but look how low they sit.

Its swings and roundabouts, Me I like HD arms and other people like steering guards. but I will fit nothing to my mota that takes offroad ability away from it. How many trials vehicles have them fitted..................................go see for yourself................
I bet you cant find more than a handful throughout the country in the thousands of trials vehicles competing week in week out.

P.s I have a front diff guard......................why my mrs dad gave it to me from his series. I would not of brought one but they're not too bad because all they usually do is fall off and make your diff pan rust quicker by trapping water and mud against the diff pan.

Essentials,

Nylon 24mm or similar rope I prefer 8 meter as it can be doubled up and be useful if you need to change the angle of pull.

Recovery points ideally 2 at the front and 2 or 3 at the rear. usually 2 front jate rings and a tow ball rear minimum. Best would be a nato or second choice a pin type as pins hang low whereas the nato does not hang low.

a pair of rated shackles, a charged phone sensible people around you that know how to do safe effective recovery. thats all you NEED oh and a tank full of go juice and a camera to take some pics of you enjoying yourself.

thanks guys... jai.. you make a good point about steering guards! think ill chance it thi time and see how we get on.. for what they cot i may get a pair of diff guards.. will speak to the lad leading and see what he thinks.

I will take plenty of pics and post them on here... hopfully get sum snow and plenty of mud

Bush sliders? as in bush wires from your bull bar to your highest corner of your roof?

I have these fitted they are worthless unless mounted correctly many many are on for looks and mis the whole idea that its to guide bushes over your screen and light and whatever other crap is bolted to the front of the motor. Mine have 3 inch steel spreader plates under the wing note here if you go under somthing bigger that bushes it will pull your wing off. Its best to mount to a bull bar outermost edge. as its solid unlike your wing

Bush Wires are also illegal on the road, including Green Lanes. They're not very pedestrian friendly.

Not, strictly speaking true, they are not illegal if an OEM fit.
I know of one Camel trophy 110 with bush wires and the owner carries a statement with him that says they are OEM. Has no trouble with the cops, but does get stopped if out of his local patch.

saying that, what you dont need is to totally **** the local plod off where you are going, they can make your day a total pain. and i'll second the comment about how far you can go on AT's.
and ffs stay on the path, take some maps and most important know how to read them.

have fun though there is nowhere finer than mid wales for laning.

i dont know about wales but in the lake district,were i do most of my green laning i would say a steering guard and diff guards are essential,i have a steel unbranded steering guard and qt diff guards,they were expensive but well worth the money,and they loook good too

also recovery points front and rear, recovery straps and shacklesand also as a minimum you need:-
basic tool kit,bit of food and something to drink,warm jacket,fully charged mobile,bit of cash,maps of area.

f*** me, I'm off to the lakes if the lanes make you need that much just for a bit of laning.
or is it the case that lots in the car and rarely comes out, I've carried a set of waffles in the back for 2 years and never used them til september when a group of us were trying to get a **** out of a bog a 100yds above a bridleway, that is why i say the most important bit of kit is maps and the ability to use em, cos lanes is roads and as such should ( in theory) be drivable by anybody.
but thats an argument for another day

have you seen some of the lanes in the lakes!? i got stuck a few weeks back on my own!

was there a couple of hours trying to dig my landy out,luckily a four wheel drive club came the other way and recovered me,i was glad to have a big warm jacket with me and a flask of tea! i was picturing myself being there all night!:doh:
