mmm thats a good question. it may be time to get the other one linered sooner than i thought. this block was only going to be a stopgap really and i was getting the other machined for eventual refit in the car!! looks like my plans are scuppered

When I fitted the brand new short engine to my 4.6 a couple of years ago, I used my existing heads etc. The assembly went fine considering the original engine was a late 96 build.
To be perfectly honest Gav., I feel that there may be be more than just replacing rings and shells..you have a short engine that the history is unknown. Why wasn't it sold complete?
The ring set, shells, gaskets, studs or bolts are going to cost a fair few bob and from a personal point of view, I would think very carefully as to whether the present engine is a pup. I know that this is not what you want to hear. The water traces in the oil worries me, plus if the rings have gone..would all 8 sets just die together? If it is down to lack of servicing or oil changes, then the interior of the block would also be crudged up and filthy, yet you say that the liner bores are smooth and unmarked..something just doesn't add up. If you fancy a chat, send me a PM and I will give you a call, I'm only tatting around.

going on what john said it could be a lot of money down the drain, you have come this far surely it must be worth considering getting your original block sorted, arp studs aint cheap,if your planning on getting them for the heads theres 100 notes straight off along with a set of rings and shells,i know everyone to his own,but i would consider looking into getting the original block done, rather than spending more on an unknown block, maybe clean the 14 bolt block and turn it into a coffee table and sell it make some cash back towards getting the other one done, but this is my opinion, only you can make the final decision, but i will gladly helpyou in any way whatever you decide;)

i have toyed with this engine quite alot now and i'm also getting to the point where i am wondering if its justified. the other block(10 bolt) was going to have a nice full rebuild so i know it will last the life of the car but that can only be done over time.

its a decision that i will have to ponder. maybe not use arp studs if its going to 100 quid just to see if it helps. i will get the pistons out an see what that can tell me.

anyone know how much the liner job would be. my stepdad knows a machineist so i think that wont cost too much.

but i'm in two minds whether to get mine done or just get rid of the car if thats the case!!

ive heard somewhere that getting your own block th lined is around £600,i,ll have a fish about and try and find where i saw it,meanwhile have a word with these guys

www.westwoodtrading.co.uk

as i don,t know at what cost the liners are,but i wouldn,t get them from rpi as they are way overpriced on everything

not yet mate, just got in from work so i wont be thinking too much!!! that westwood firm seem to be able to fit the liners to suit pistons, i.e use existing pistons with a new set of rings and have the block linered. is this anygood? will they be able to match the original bore measurements?

westwood put a step at the bottom of the liner/block, will this work?

no i make chrome(smelter) and, so long as everyone needs shiney stuff then i'm busy.

trouble is, no one is buying cars and thats a major metals customer for many different metals not just chrome!!

the bad bit is when i'm doing o/t its usually w/end (time & 1/2 and double time:D:D) and thats the main time when i can do the car and the ramp and tools are generally free

so i either have no money and loads of time or loads of money and no time! and dont suggest saving b'cause thats just impossible cos when i see something i end up buying it!!!

well looking at it another way,if and when you get the engine done,at least you can be our resident engine specialist,

it's all i have been thinking about, i have learned a lot about removal and fitting, i havnt done a bad job of it considering its my first v8!!

i know what it,s like, loads of time but know money, but im hoping that might change tommorow as ive got a work tial to goto,so see what happens,id rather work than sit on my arse all day

i bet youd sit on yr arse if ya won lotto, i know i would enjoy scratching mi plums on settee all day!

maybe john knows what thats like since his retirement lucky bugger!
