i was wondering what your opinions are as far as the best engine oil for 4.0 p38, 2001, also best filters? if i supply oil and filter my local garage will do the change for £20! rather do this than have them use there own oil.

As long as they use the oil you supply.a friend once put his working gun dog in kennels and supplied the food. The kennel owner also had working dog's,one guess who got fed the expensive dog food and who got fed the pigs lips snd r soles.it came to light when his dog became ill and the kennel maid let slip.

lol really!!!! no they are good as gold down there, shame they not land rover specialist, they just an ordinary service garage but good enough for things like oil change.

I've spoken to RPI engineering and Turners they both recommended High Zinc 20W50.
Or 10w50 if you're in colder climates.

The RV8 in our P38s is a 1960s engine with mid 90s fuel injection slapped on top! :D

I change my oil so foten (every 5k miles) that it doesn't matter that much so I just use RAVE spec from the Smith & Allan eBay shop (cheaper than their own site).

Some v8 owners recommend the Penrite oils as they do a high zinc one.

Use poor quality oil and it doesn't matter how often you change it.

cheers, ill look for high zink, i live chester way so dont think any need for 10w50, its not that bad here!!!!

cheers lads, getting there on the to do list. although it is a very clean low mileage car there isnt a lot of service history, any jobs you would recommend doing as a precaution, the last owner said it was serviced every year but who knows.
im obviously doing oil and filter, its booked in at local LR garage for cooling system flush and refill, also gearbox oil and filter. cheers.

Diffs & transfer box oil would be on my list.

Mann are my favourite filters. Oil won't cure engine issues but if it's in pretty good fettle penrite hpr 10/50 is grand and not to pricey. 20/50 Dino oil I would steer clear of the p38 runs to hot for this stuff( black death). Land Rover recommend 10/40 btw but they weren't that bothered! 5/30 definitely to thin.

Positively tropical here.n:D:D
isnt it just!!!!! is that another p38 on the wirral or something newer??

also been recommended high zinc 20w50, would that be the same as 20/50 dino that you say stear clear of?

You can get synthetic 20w50.

It's a tad more expensive but worth it..

The ZDDP is essential for the Flat tappet cams.
