Dynachip strikes again!

I'm cautiously optimistic about next Wednesday, Anecdotal evidence suggest some say it just drives better, some say the difference is like night and day, and some say it's like going from driving a bath tub to driving an F15!!! We'll see, and I'll report back my findings, the things we talked about, what he found wrong on the old Nano dooby whatsit thingy and how I rate the improvement.

Hi Bankz, which intercooler did you buy and was it easy to fit yourself (if you are not indeed a actual mechanic)?

Not a mechanic by any means! Just learnt to be handy with a spanner. I went for the newer Britpart one which as rumour has it is a rebranded Serck for less cash. 2000 miles still perfect, low down power is improved, no black smoke on gear changes either. MPG about town is 26 - 28 depending how I drive, average 34mpg motorway.

As for fitting not hard but not easy. Check my 'build' thread in my sig some info there, more just damn stupid things LR did during the design process. The hardest part was probably getting the silicone hoses to fit round the pipes!!

Cool will do, 34mpg on the motorway and extra power sounds nice :)

More power, more torque, better fuel economy. What a dream world some live in. Do you know how you get more power, more torque from a diesel engine? More linear map may give a slight improvement on a good run but that is it.

All im saying is what I have experienced and felt since doing all the mods.

There is a place near by that charges about £30 for a BHP/ft/lb read out so I shall post up figures when I do it.

My 90 is without any shadow of a doubt considerably faster, more power and better mpg.

Not that I want a racing car but this moves a little better than mine

The only way to get more power from a diesel by mapping is to inject more fuel. It can't be done any other way.

Not sure what to tell you, when I had my 90 to start with I was averaging 23pg around town 25 or so on the Mway. Since I have fitted a de-cat, straight through, egr blank, whittled out the airbox for better airflow, remap, larger intercooler and upped the boost slightly. Atfer all that powers up as is mpg and my driving style is pretty much the same. So unless im imagining things....

Never said just the map gave better mpg but as a part of a larger system it has improved things dramatically. 10mpg gain is a fair amount.

Though through driving economically with a map you dont have to put your foot down so hard keep up with traffic etc... extra power means less right foot. At least thats I how see it, pretty poor explanation though..

To the chaps on here that have used Dynachip services, may I ask what payment methods Mike accepts? I don't know wether to go and get some cash in case he doesn't accept major debit cards!

I echo the above from bankz. I am now definitely more fuel efficient after the remap. I know nothing about diesel engines, but I know my wallet has more money in it.

I used to fill the car up every Thursday night on the way home from work. My daily commute is pretty routine and having an 8 month old baby (and another 'family' car) I don't get out much other than for work. Since the initial 'speed honeymoon' I had after the remap, I now don't fill every 7 days, but every 9/10 days! I keep track, so know how 100%..

For reference, I had the standard 'stage 1' remap from dynachip, have blanked the EGR and got a straight through decat (standard intercooler until I can save for a performance one).

My thinking about it is that if you have more power, or in the Defenders case a regular amount of power, you don't have to floor it to get up to speed or push the engine as hard. So in theory the remap acts as if your driving on an economy run when you drive normally.

All done.

I was booked in for first thing tomorrow morning. Mike called me this afternoon to say a customer in the Torbay area had let him down, and if I could meet him in E*eter services, he can do it today and only for £200 for helping him out by meeting him 42 miles up the road!! Bargain, I thought, and only a tenner in fuel for there and back - game on.

Anyhow, all mapped, I asked for as much power as possible without MPG suffering toooooooooooooo much:p. Mike duly obliged and remapped it as far as he would dare with out getting near the scenario of warping the intercooler and thingies (too technical for me to explain!) Mike ran the Nano dooby whatsit thingy and showed two faults. He thought they were previous uncleared faults so ran it again - this time the old girl showed no faults. Job's a good un.

A few tips from Mike: I bypassed the wastegate regulator after reading some advice on here - I had a frown from Mike. he said I need to re-connect it to it's original state to get max pull at high revs!! Ok, I thought, That's a simple job. Also he spotted that someone had been playing with the turbo wastegate actuator. It was set too high and was in danger of overboost if mapped in it's current setting. He asked If I had touched it. Err hum - not me guv!! :D

He, Mike, notice I had de-egr'd it, and suggested about de-catting it. I said it's a 2003 model, it was fitted with a cat therefore it needs to stay on for current MOT legislation. I can't divulge the next bit of very handy information he give me. I'm sure the well versed TD5 aficionados on here will get Mike's gist. Anyway, all done in about 40 minutes, paid the man, and we both went our separate ways.

I eaderly awaited to drive back to Cornwall. Time for some fun me thinks. Foooooooooooooooooooooookin hells teeth man. It goes like a fast thing from fastville Alabama. ****ed-off everyting from the lights. Absolute breeze pulling out on slip-roads and roundabouts etc. At one point I was doing 80 without even realising!! That's because I'm used to flooring it to get it to go.

It's safe to say, I'm in love with me old Disco, again!! Gawd bless you mam!! :)

Just booked Mike to come look at my Disco TD5 next week. First impressions are he is very knowledgeable and advised me on what I needed based on my trip (off the Africa with heavy load). Recommended a Stage One to give me more torque and better MPG due to gear improvements. Asked if I needed a new inter cooler and he said not with a Stage One. Will get my inter cooler flushed out instead.

Interesting, bankzy,

So, what is the main difference between a S1 and a S2 remap? Is a S2 a more customized map? I was on the understanding that you start having to change intercoolers and other expensive stuff for a S2 map to be effective! Or am I talking bollox?:D
