Hi all, I just joined the forums after much browsing for things about the range rover, I've bought my 2000 reg dse about 4 months ago after hearing the price and always dreaming of owning a range, only problem I've had so far is serpentine belt destroyed itself but I replaced that no problem, had a very enjoyable 4 months driving until yesterday I was cassually driving home from work on an A road slowed down went round a roundabout and then tried to accelerate back off Onto another A road then hardly any revs and a full temp guage so I quickly slammed it up the verge and turned it off waited for it to cool down and drove home slowly, it's lost water through the overflow on the header tank and think it might be air locked now but all of that asside the viscous fan, when engines stopped you can wobble it back and forth and I tried the newspaper trick to stop it when running and hot and it took a little force but it stopped spinning, so before I jump on the bandwagon of buying a new fan I thought I would get some opinions.
Help much aprecaited Danny.

Yep, sounds like the viscous fan is shot. I can give you a mod to use the aircon fans for cooling, assuming yours has aircon. No need then for the viscous fan. PM me with an email address if you want details.

:welcome:

Thanks for your replies and big thanks to datatek for the email sorry for lack of response just been busy with work, Ive manually wired the condenser fans to come on with the ignition now not sure if there getting old but they don't seem to spin what looks fast enough to keep the engine cool but what do I know there prolly fine but just to try but now it's still overheating think its majorly air locked am gonna try running with the header tank open like a friend recommended and top it up, is there any other special ways with the BMW unit? I not sure on the water pump there's still plenty of pressure in the system and the fan wobbles on its joint not the shaft so no slack in the shaft, well I'm gonna go try bleed it through with the heaters open hopefully get them working again as thats a good sign right?
Cheers for the replies Danny

Think you had better change the viscous fan ASAP or do the Data mod.

You mean as in mod the 2 front fans to come on instead of the viscous right? If so then I've got them manually wired to be constantly on ATM for testing purposes but if the cars air locked or maybe even the thermostats stuck its pointless Anyways right?

Datatek if you wire fans to come on with ignition won't they burn out through constant use or have you a temp related switch mod too???

You mean as in the mod to make the two upfront fans act instead of the viscous? If so I have wired them temporarily to the ignition to test them but the cars still overheats, just tried to bleed it through not much avail it nothing really happened until the engine warmed right up and it pushed water back out the header tank with air bubbles the left side heater matrix pipe started to warm up but not much pretty sure the thermostats working, not to sure now maybe im not bleeding it properly or it could be water pump or head related its only ever been in the red once and if I'm testing it il shut it off before the white line to try and prevent damage im at a loss. Also I've wired the fans up to be on constantly temporarily I'm not going to leave it that way don't worry it's just to test but seeing as the cars still overheating due to whatever else then I'm gonna hafta cure the other problem 1st, and yes there's a thermostat involved in datateks mod! :p

There should be circulation through the heater pipes at all times thermostat shut or open. Try back flushing the heater. Have you looked at the thermostat and water pump? Short odds on water pump being knackered.

As wammers said and by the sound of play in your fan water pump looking duff and clean out the small pipe that leads from radiator to header tank with compressed air that's your air bleeding device .

The mod uses a thermostat just as used on most modern cars. The fans wil last as long as the car.:)

Cool might need it one day I had heat problems, it's 16 years old I didn't mess about I replaced the lot fan stat and rad all my problems disappeared didn't want to take chances with my head expensive, so let's hope it last another 16 years ekk or I'll be pm in ya

If it's a diesel you can chuck the viscous with the fans mod, quicker warm up especially in winter and a small improvement in fuel consumption:)

I chucked the fan in the defender when I owned it but with the rangie and her six pot engine and seeing the speed it heats up in the mornings ie those two extrA pots increase the heat I ve never wanted to run it without the constant fan in case something went wrong with the water cooling system I would have more chance of saving the head
