I intend to crack on early tomorrow so if it is shafts I can get them ordered or if it is the diff find one on the bay

It is sounding more like a selector shaft in the hi/lo box is stuck, perhaps part way. The first thing I would do is put the yellow knob down and move it in and out of low range a few times with a bit of force and make sure it comes up fully. You could put it in axle stands and see what the wheels do. I decided a half shaft was broken and did this to confrim it, was more than a bit suprised to see all the wheels go round, turned out to be a "lazy" free wheel hub that was gummed up with grease.

Let me know if it's a diff, it's vaguely possible that I have a spare here. (I had a brutal clear out when I moved workshops...).

very kind of you, if you do have one and want to sell it, I wouldn't mind having a spare.

got it up on stands this morning in 4wd, rear passenger wheel not turning, I held onto the drivers side and passenger side still didn't turn, so I guess I shall take out that halfshaft .

thanks for all the replies.

halfshaft is intact - unless the splines are too worn - so diff? pic is a bit crap but best I can do with my shaky hands

looking down the tube to the diff end - which looks ok - the diff seems to have 12 splines but the halfshaft 10, is that right?

with the engine on and in rear wheel drive only, looking down the tube the diff splines are turning, put halfshaft back in still no wheel turn but there is a clunking coming from the axle.

have I just got a wrong half shaft?

I shall order a new passenger one as they are only about £20 and see if that fixes it

might renew both as they are out now anyway

If they both look like that, and the outer ends are firmly attached, then it's looking like a diff problem.

Just got up to the workshop, and I do have one. Don't really want to sell it, but happy to lend it if you're in a rush to get rolling. The alternative is to take out your front one and use that at the back until your broken one is rebuilt.

very decent of you to offer the diff, I don't like borrowing peoples stuff though. Wouldn't want to borrow yours and break it.

I would rather my daughter wasn't without a car but I would prefer a permanent fix to the problem.

I shall try the new shafts, should arrive tomorrow, if they don't solve the issue I shall swap the diffs over, if that works let her have the car back and see if I can source one on the bay or something, maybe stick a wanted ad on here. then stick the used diff on the front when she comes back if I can find one before Christmas.

I assume if I take the front diff off I would need to take the shafts out too

nothing wrong with the shaft diff splines pictured replacing it wont help
