So the ones in the pics yea I doubt il keep the car longer then another year so you reckon the cheaper be ok for a while ?Ones longer than the other and passes thru an extension piece cuz the diff is off centre
Use the diagram and cross reference what you can see under the car to work out which part no you needSo the ones in the pics yea I doubt il keep the car longer then another year so you reckon the cheaper be ok for a while ?
Second hand shaft
Left one seems common, right hand less so
You'll have an oem original shaft for prob less than the cost of an aftermarket one, it does make a lot of sense if you're only gonna run it for a yearYou think I’m better finding a used shaft rather then aftermarket ?
The RH drive shaft is a long shaft that goes through the extension tube of the front diff. The drive shaft bearings are installed in the diff extension, and can be changed as necessary, although a replacement extension isn't that expensive. It's not an impossible job to do DIY and no special tools are needed, but unless you're able to support the vehicle's enormous weight safely, I'd entrust the work to someone who has done such work before with suitable equipment to support the vehicle correctly.Well upon looking at what’s involved, I changed all the front hubs/bearings last year it doesn’t look like it would take much more stripping down then that to replace , so to save having it recovered to another garage and costs I’m going to attempt it , is it just a new r/h drive shaft I would need and that would include everything needed to replace like for like is it likely a drive shaft failing damages anything else as hoping just be a simple replacement ( prob not so simple with these cars )
Yea of course will be on axle stands well it is sat now on them , been under it numerous times now the amount of issues these car develop , so it should come out with a tap , hammer type of thing , any other tips or tricks to replacing this I’m currently off with the calliper , disc , ready to go again for an hour after work tommorow will remove hub and look at the other bits that need removingThe RH drive shaft is a long shaft that goes through the extension tube of the front diff. I was just thinking as the right shaft rarely fails, its a good bet a 2nd hand one will be just fine, and have plenty of useable life in it.You think I’m better finding a used shaft rather then aftermarket ?
I reckon you have had more problems in the short time you have had yours than I have had in the 9 yrs I have owned mine.Yea of course will be on axle stands well it is sat now on them , been under it numerous times now the amount of issues these car develop , so it should come out with a tap , hammer type of thing , any other tips or tricks to replacing this I’m currently off with the calliper and disc ready to go again for an hour after work tomorrow will remove hub and look at the other bits that need removing
But it is a complete ball ache without a lift that diff extension was a right pain in the arse for meIt's not an impossible job to do DIY
Now I’m confused now lol with this extension I thought it was just the r side drive shaft I needed the part you posted earlier is there another part required ? Or is it awkward to get in sorry to sound dumb just like to know as much as poss before getting to that stage ?But it is a complete ball ache without a lift that diff extension was a right pain in the arse for me
OP Nodge is right, be better to get a replacement extension as well. Its all coming back to me now
Yea can’t be helped some people get lucky some don’t as with everything in life , tbh this is what I’ve replaced,I reckon you have had more problems in the short time you have had yours than I have had in the 9 yrs I have owned mine.
Mine has genuinly been a good car, less trouble than the td5 it replaced.
Yea can’t be helped some people get lucky some don’t as with everything in life , tbh this is what I’ve replaced,
2 front hubs , instrument cluster , brakes pads ,compressor, repaired the hand brake , boot lock and now working on drive shaft , a few of those were done as maintenance oh and track rod ends , I’ve payed no money to a garage only for wheel alignment so tbh for an old motor I shouldn’t complain too muc
Oh and lynall without your help in the past and others it would have cost a fortune so I’m gratefulYea can’t be helped some people get lucky some don’t as with everything in life , tbh this is what I’ve replaced,

Take a look at used d3 front diffs on ebay, some come bare and some come with the drive shaft extension casing, so by my figuring you can just replace the shaft and not the extension casing, which is what it sound like you may need? Now I’m confused now lol with this extension I thought it was just the r side drive shaft I needed the part you posted earlier is there another part required ?
