Double skinned rear upper body on 110?

So I'm trying to make sense of the back of my SW 110. This is what the inside looks like:

It's a flat panel on the outside but it seems to sit slightly proud of the rest of the bodywork. also, on the inside the rivets look a little oddly placed but it does have a capping on the outside. I was starting to think that they just added an extra panel over the other one and fudged a capping on it, but looking at this video (www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6uE6YMAMpQ) they seem to have the same thing, only held on with rivets.

Is this common on the vehicles, do they all have two panels on the back? If it's not normal then could anyone share there opinion on this? It looks like the extra panel is only held on with adhesive, which seems weird. I need to figure it out because I want to put windows in the back and I know it won't work if the depth of the cutout in the panel doesn't match the depth of the window kit.
 
Looks like it might have been done at the factory to make the 110 utility by covering the rear windows on a standard station wagon.
 
Nice to have confirmation that I can look into removing it. It looks like there did used to be glass in there because it looks like the rivets were drilled out. Even the glass in the rear door has been removed, I’m guessing it was to stop animals from smashing it while being transported. I was planning on replacing the capping on one side so now I’m thinking about removing the whole thing and squeezing it into my garage so I can get all this done in one big job. Thanks for the help.

Personally, I would look to buy a set of rear sides with windows already in. Sell the ones you have as being “modified”, to be like utility sides, you may be surprised what someone is willing to pay for them. I picked up a set or series sides that I’m converting and painting, to replace my CSW sides. It’s quite a common swap.

I like that idea. Looking on eBay the sides don’t seem too expensive and I could prepare them before without having a Defender sat there with no roof. Plus I wouldn’t have to buy the window kit.
