Double din stereo

Any clues, having bought a 2011 freelander 2, want to change the basic stereo for double din, aftermarket connectors not working, 1 didn’t fit (too many prongs) the other fitted but didn’t power up?? Is there a special connector? There are 2 blocks coming from vehicle (1 i presume connects to clock on dashboard) and other is for radio, however both aftermarket only have 1 block to connect??
 
You will need to power an aftermarket HU from a switched feed, like one from the power sockets. The standard FL2 HU is powered all the time, and its turned on and off with software, fed down the CAN bus.
 
I've got a freelander 1 rather than a FL2 so I'm not an expert on them, but I can tell you that aftermarket stereos all come with standardised DIN plugs, there is a small industry making adapters from the various vehicle OEM proprietary connectors to the standardised plugs. Once you get the adapter loom it is literally plug and play, one end plugs into the cars own wiring plug, the other plugs connect to the new headunit, easy peasy...

You'll just need to look up the webpages or the details of the advert on eBay or whatever and makesure its the right one for your vehicle as sometimes if your car has the premium stereo rather than the basic one, its a different connector so its a different adapter you need. Hope that makes sense and doesnt' confuse you too much?

And in addition you'll also need fascia adapter as the original head unit is a different size to a double din so to avoid having gaps in the dash you put in a plastic panel with the right sized hole in it for a double din head unit. You can get everything as a kit, the kits are usually a little bit more expensive than buying the parts individually but it saves a bit of hassle?

Yes I believe there is, however you'll need to do some additional wiring as the standard HU doesn't have a switched power supply, like older vehicles. The FL2 uses a data line called CAN to control when the HU goes on and off, which is why you'll need to take a switched feed from somewhere else that is switched, like the power socket. ;)
 
Not sure if this is any use, I've watched a few of their video's - mainly relating to the new defender...
