Discovery Detachable Tow Bars

Doubt if the insurance companies in this country will be too pleased either.

Just lucky no one appears to have been injured yet.

One point which is worth noting, for the trailers to run away the break away cables cant have brought the brakes on.

Just shows you shouldn't connect the breakaway to the tow bar, I see it done regularly

see now this is a good reason to post a facebook link

unfortunately usally all we get is ****e !

land rover are going badly downhill and will soon disappear is this carries on , personally I couldent care as I think the company died a long time ago , they only make ****e now and the build quality is shocking

this is the latest in a whole host of screw ups for a questionable company as it is

Very common problem with them - loads of cases reported... Although i think the weight limit is a lot lower on the detachable so they were probably over anyway...

You mean they factory fitted towbars not capable of pull the max weight the car is allowed to :eek::eek:

Did they tell people :confused::confused::confused:

Very poor given that a lot of people buy Discos to pull livestock and other heavy trailers

Actually I looked this up, they are rated at 3.5 tonnes, same as the non detachable ones

They arn't held in with a pin. The hitch is a V shape apex at the top, this fits into a socket and when it gets to the top of the socket a bolt (a bit like a yale lock) shoots out into a slot in the chassis. Then this is locked in position by a rotating lock barrel in the hitch and a key you can remove.
I have seen plenty of chassis worn away where the lock bolt rubs in the chassis slot. unfortuantly this is part of the chassis and can't be renewed.
I haven't had any in at work that have fallen out but have seen a few very loose. I would stick with the fixed drop plate job.

Actually, since TATA took over, build quality seems to be on the up. the LR4 Disco came in the J D Power top 10 for reliability if I remember rightly.

jlr do state, and sales should specify, that those detachable tow bars are not meant for regular towing and a proper un-detachable tow pack should be fitted to the car!

in the case of defenders I don't belive this rings true, not sure about others but there are a lot of unhappy people on the site that link was on

I used to work on brand new defenders while working for a roll cage company

bolts were loose/missing

metal filings from holes drilled were left there and rusted into the white paintwork ( inside)

brackets such as lower wing supports loose/missing

interior panels badly cut/fitted

on some vehicles things like interior lights were not working and air intake connections hanging off

could list a lot more !

utter ****e

I PDI new Defenders and do warranty work on them and I don't see any of the things on your list. Yes we get the odd issue but that is what a PDI is for. They might be old fashioned but but you have to ask why do they keep selling.
