Disco 2 - Door opening gap

Evening all,

Just a quick one.... can the door hinges be adjusted to allow doors to open further.

The front door on my disco 2 opens almost to a 90 degree angle which is fab. The rear doors do not open as far and can be really annoying when sorting the kids etc.

Don't think it's possible to get the back doors to open any further than they do now. If you look in between the top and bottom hinges, you will notice a flat bar that slides in and out of the door as it opens and closes. That bar serves to keep the door from shutting on its own weight when opened, as well as limit how wide the door opens. On the D2, I believe the problem as you may be experiencing now lies with the rather small size of the opening left to access the vehicle between the B-pillar and curvature of the tyre well. Makes it especially difficult for children and the elderly to climb in back there....

I don't think you'll find any adjustment on the hinges, the extent of opening is a function of the check strap. You're going to have to gain access to the inside of the door to see whether there's something obstruction or preventing the full extension of the check strap.

you could try cutting out the door stays (flat metal bars as mentioned above) but then the doors would swing around in the wind so you would have to be careful. or you could try using front ones, if you could get some from a scrappy but i'm not sure if they would fit, or if there would be an issue where they might not go back into the b-pillar enough.

Many thanks for your reply... makes perfect sense what you are saying but what a pain.

If that flat bar was removed I suppose the door would be flapping all over the place presenting its own problems- just wondering if a bespoke bar could be made.

I think if they could have opened more without the risk of damaging the outer skin on the front door panel then they would have been designed to.

Hi Brian, think it is designed to be a narrow opening as both doors are like it/ unless it’s a common fault.

I suppose you could try, but you might come across a maximum length problem then. Since the check strap (flat bar) is curved you might find it fouling against the outer skin of the door when it's closed.

Hi Bobdog,

That was my exact thinking- using front door stays. Might have a play about with the front ones and fit one of them to the back and if it works get some more from a scrappy.

Sounds like it will be more trouble than it’s worth. Live with it and get on with it seems to be the way forward.

It’s just annoying when trying to strap kids in or do anything in the back to be honest - I’m not the biggest of guys either!
