Did they have insane back wheel articulation? Scammel Explorers? a bit old
but they were used for tank recovery... or all recovery, there was one for
sale for $13000, or about 4500 quid... outside my budget but I woulda loved
to get it...

That's the one!! I just did a quick google for some info and it seems
they were a development of a 1920's design called the pioneer. They
were made in the fifties it seems. They are 6 wheel drive and one of their
best features is 'insane' articulation.

I found one link claiming that one was only sold out of service in '93!
