Defender 90 300tdi exhaust

Good morning all, when I purchased my 1997 300tdi 90 bare chassis for restoration a rear silencer came with it. Am I right in saying there are only certain exhaust styles that will fit? The silencer I have has both pipes coming from one end if this helps?

Yes,that's the same style,just not stainless. I am just wondering if there is another style I should be looking at also? eg different style silencer or length of centre section. Thanks.
 
You can get a straight section which deletes the centre 'box' .... but that is the one for your D90. The after market center pipe is typically called a "sports exhaust".
You can also get a straight through (no silencer boxes).
De-Cat pipe.
There are some rear sections that come out the side .... Google is your friend at this point.

Personally i'd stick with standard or put on a 'sports' with just the standard rear end can, i've found that to be the best combination (for me)...
 
I got mine from Demand Engineering Ltd in Suffolk. Not cheap but all stainless, including hanging brackets & flanges. Will last a lifetime. Previous ‘stainless’ exhaust from a well known manufacturer et had mild steel hangers & flanges. The Demand Enginerring one fitted a treat - no fettling to get to fit without rattling.
 
Cheers guys, I would prefer to go full stainless if I am honest but at the moment I have quite a few other items on my shopping list;)
 
Land Rover fitted a number of different exhausts to the Defender at that time. Mine is a 1997 Defender 90 and it has the straighter pipe arrangement with the one silencer box in the middle. This one

Another design has two silencer boxes, one of which goes off to the other side of the vehicle as you have described.
Is your chassis the original chassis? If so, it will probably have the hangers on in place for the original exhaust set up, so it would make sense to stick to that one. If it is a new chassis then you could buy the hangers for the design of 300Tdi exhaust you fancy.

I've bought a few after market (ie not Britpart) exhaust sections over the years via local motor factors. What I've found is that the fit can be very variable. I've started getting mine from Paddocks as the Britpart ones seem to be a better and more consistent fit than other after market makes. A positive word about Britpart, who would have thought it :rolleyes:

Agreed.
I have had a couple of the most commonly available SS systems on my 300TDi 90 over the past 20-odd years and they were not as good as the old Rimmer Bros SS system I previously had on my old 101FC.
2-Years ago I fitted a Demand Sports system and it has been great, fitted well and looks to be made to last.

They do look extremely good quality and also look the part,as the budget dose not quite stretch that far at the moment,maybe something to look at in the future?;)
 
So I visited my local Land rover specialist (JSF)over the weekend who were extremely helpful and supplied me with the correct exhaust system for my 90. Nothing flashy at the moment but I just want to get the project up and running.
 
Hi all again, apologies for the sporadic questions but I think of jobs that need doing throughout the day. Would anyone have any tips or diagrams as to where the front to rear and front brake pipes are routed on a 90 please? Have searched online but not found anything accurate.
 
Suggest you have an evening and read some of the project Fred’s as many will show pics of bare chassis and brake lines, and bulk head pics.
And or start a new Fred and I am sure you will get loads of pics donated for help.

Thanks marjon,these forums are pretty alien to me and not really too sure what to ask and where to post it but everyone so far has been helpful, a great place for advice.
 
If you are building up from a chassis why not start your own build Fred :)
Don’t matter how long it takes and there is always plenty of motivation help;).

You asked in the right section for exhaust start again for brake lines:), also helps for future when other people ask same question.
