Anyone know whether I need a 23 or 33 spline cV for my Defender. Parts place don’t seem to know although I think they should. It’s a pretty much original 200 tdi with 10 spline diff or perhaps half shafts :D. 1991 reg. thanks.

So if no one knows the answer to this how do I find out. Does it have a number on it if I crawl underneath :D.

The only way to know for sure would be to remove the parts, however if yours is a pretty much unmolested truck then you should be fine on the year and vin number.

Sue, you could always ask Neil, coz he's had yours in bits more times than I've had a decent pint up here! :p:p
Are you talking about the inner or outer half shaft?
If it's the outer shaft, I'd be inclined to pop the hub cap off and count the number of splines yourself ;);)

Thanks. Neil hadn’t had the CV in bits as I haven’t had one go before. I know it had 10 spline half shafts but gif some reason the cv is different and had 23 or33. Confusing or what

what!!
So we still don't know if it's your inner or outer shaft?
Could it be the drive flange and not the shaft?

Trust you Sue, 91-93 could be either 23's or 33's
The axles do have serial numbers and to help you, have a look at the vid
Are you changing the entire CV unit?

You are asking me those questions :D. It has been too long since I was on here obviously.

OK Sue, let's start at the beginning.
What's it doing, what's it not doing, and on which side that makes you want to start spannering it apart?

It’s making a knocking noise which Dave says is the CV. I’m not going to do the job lol

Have you lifted a corner and checked that it's not the swivels by seeing if there is any top/bottom movement?
If there is, it can usually be cured by taking a shim or two out.
Are your swivels filled with EP90 or One-Shot grease?

I've never yet had a supplier refuse to let me buy both (or even three in the case of Fiats) parts on sale or return so that I'm covered either way.

yours should be 33,early shafts/cvs had 23 and a diameter the same as the shaft, which meant cv had a big hole and so weak spider, the later 33 had a reduced diameter shaft spline that entered cv so strengthening the spider ,all of which was pointless as the diff end of shaft with 10 spline was the weak point

Sue, I did wonder how long it would be before the Oracle came in and helped out with the difinitive answer!
Thanks James
