Also, does anyone have an opinion or experience of Britpats Teflon swivels? Do they abrade the swivel seal more that the chrome ones? Less? Are they worth it?

I have had the Teflon balls on mine for about 10 years and 300k miles. They are still going strong. I did not think you could still get the chrome ones (certainly not at a sensible price) which is why I got them when I did mine. They were the only option.

The swivels coming off were really bad. What is the half life of those rubber gaiters? I guess it depends if you drive over branches and sticks a lot, but I would guess if you were on stone chip tracks for hundreds of miles they would come into their own. Anyone used them?

The gaiters are a little double edged. They can fill with mud and water and and not drain meaning that the seals gets damaged quicker and things rust. But it depends one the trrain you use them on. But for road/gravel use where they are not regularly submerged in mud and water they can be beneficial.

I delivered a trailer full of steel to Heinrich the Sandstrahler yesterday. Should be back at the end of the week, I can't wait to get some primer on, I am using 2 part epoxy primer and top coats. Once hard the axles and linkages will probably then be wiped over with black waxoil.

So, I had the handbrake off. It is basically in very good nick, except that it is FULL of oil. Actually it is probably in good nick because it is full of oil.

So a lot of today was about preparing to drop the boxes. I personally have never had them off, but I understand it is easier to get them both off together than just the transfer box. Seats are out, gearbox tunnel tomorrow, then go find an engine hoist or make a frame to lower it from. Any one got a favorite design that can be lashed together from poles? I have some heavy scaff tubes and string.

I drop them on the floor and slide them out. A sheet of hardboard, shiny side down, works well.

Thanks for the info Dag019.

Paddocks list chrome swivels at 227 quid. 250 for the Teflon. 300k miles is a fair way on one set without them chipping and leaking. And you have no swivel protection?

Boguing, Good tip, thanks it may come to that. I like that the hardboard is so thin, giving max clearance under the chassis when slid out. A pallet eats up 4 inches or so of clearance. I haven' got time to drop the boxes right now, but will get into that when I am back. I am going to do a full reseal of the LT230, and probably the input shaft to the LT77, pending inspection. The LT77 was new reconditioned by Ashcroft about 5000 miles ago, seems pretty tight, but there is slop in the transfer box. Could well be the input shaft, but I won't know until they are off and separated.

Cheers,

Martin.
