another question - would clean hydraulic oil out of tractors do the same job as engine oil?
Hydraulic oil is even better than engine oil. It is near the consistency of diesel and has less contaminants. I often use hydraulic oil from a friends plastic moulding machines. You can mix it 50/50 with diesel and it needs very little filtering if it is clean.

well thats good news! beens im an agricultural engineer that stuff is readily avaliable after service's, good clean stuff aswell :)

Can used engine oil be used in the 2.5TD engine? I've been told the 2.5TD engine doesn't like veggie oil so was wondering about waste engine oil.

With the budget I have I think I'm going to have to look for something a bit older. :(

The word biocide was used previously. What is biocide please.

A chemical substance intended to stop BioDiesel from acting as a breeding medium for bacteria.

This can happen, and if it does it can make a black mess in your tank.

indeed be a bit carefull i started running on veg oil mix of about 70% deisel / 30 veg and after about 3 tank full got a problem with my injection pump seizing !!

Thanks, i need to buy a landy first but the info is helpfull. Something else came up on the news t'other day in that a reported said that her deisel froze as it was minus 18 and deisel freezes at -15.

Just wondering if mixing it with the used oil would prevent this or if not would there be problems of seperation etc within the tank.. just a thought.

What shifty was saying was he thins down 180 litres of used engine oil with 20 litres of petrol. Then he mixes that 50/50 with Diesel.

Shifty, will the old 2.5TD run on a mix of Diesel and used engine oil? I've heard the 2.5TD's don't like the veggie oil/WVO.

OK here we go.

This is my setup as it stands now.

I rough filter (through geotex landscape mesh to catch any nuts and bolts etc.) 180 litres of the raw oil into the oil drum and add 20 litres or a Jerry full of petrol (stale stuff is excellent for this).

I made a compressed air gizmo out of standard plumbing fittings and washing machine hoses which reaches down into the drum and stops about 4 inches from the bottom. This lets the sludge settle out. I use this to pump 50 litres of thinned oil into the blue 60 litre catch tank (£60 on eBay). No more than 10psi is needed which a standard oil drum can handle with no problems. It takes about 2 minutes to shift 50 litres. I ground everything to prevent any static sparks for obvious reasons.

Once again using compressed air (cos I'm too tight to buy a proper oil pump) I filter the oil/petrol mix through two stainless mesh filters of 100 and then 50 microns. These are not shown in these pics but they are mounted in line before the dual marine filter on the 60 litre catch tank. I'll add a picture when I take one.

and then through this little beauty which is a 5-10 micron marine diesel filter.
Spare filters are £1 each on eBay and they filter about 200-300 litres before getting clogged.

Twin Double Fuel Filter Lucas CAV - Diesel , Bio WVO on eBay (end time 20-Jan-10 21:29:25 GMT)

I used to use paper paint filters but this is much better and less messy.

Once its filtered it goes into a second clean oil drum from which I can use it as required.
