Cooking oil in TD5

If its from somewhere like that I'd be cautious as I've seen every thing go in and it isn't pretty!

In short, yes, we are currently running both his P38 and my 300tdi on a veg/engine/derv mix, and we have 3 separate tanks. A settling tank which has a cone on the bottom with a large tap to drain off crap and a smaller tap 1/3 up to pour of good veg oil, that then goes into a 200ltr drum trough 1 micron filter socks. We then have a separate 100ltr drum which we filter used engine oil through a 1 micron filter sock.
We have had no problems with either vehicle since we started filtering to 1 micron, though we had a few problems when filtering only to 100 micron.
We are looking to get a TD5 Disco soon and will be running it on our usual mix.

Veg oil doesn't get rubbish chucked in like waste engine oil tho!

not usually, no, but there is still the water and solid fats that we don't want going into the fuel tank, so we just found it easier to just settle and separate it before filtering.

Yeah. That's what I used to do:) I've been experimenting with waste engine oil recently tho. But stuff I generate so I know it's kept clean ish!!! Can't generate enough though:)

I know, but its what we had knocking around at the time so didn't see much point in getting more till we need to

It does and I've used it. Normally its cleaner than engine oil as well and easier to filter. If you're not sure get 20 litres or so and give it a go before you take home hundreds of litres.

The best stuff I've used was auto transmission oil from a black cab servicing workshop but they now sell it in bulk to a recycling firm so dont give me any for nowt anymore.
 
It sounds as if the water content isn't much of a problem if i let it settle for a month then drain it off along with any sludge/crap in with it, that then will leave me a possible mix of anything else that goes into an engine, including petrol but i wouldn't expect to much of that, hydraulic and transmission oils are ok? What about gear oil? Anything i've missed?

I have read this post through all 48 pages and there are plenty of comments on 200,300TDI'S and TD5's, but I have a good old 2.5 dersel NA,(well its good for what I want untill it goes pop or i get time to fit a 200)
any reason why this home brew wouldn't work in it?:confused:

First page some one wrote veg oil and derv similar in price.
If you have a self employed business get an account at bookers cash and carry and get 20 litres of veg oil for 18.75 - thats about 94p a litre.
mix it 50/50 and you running at about 117p a litre instead of 141p for derv at the mo depending on where you live

No filtering with new stuff!!! :)
 
I would expect that in the general mix from a garage it would be mainly
Engine oil
Gear oil
Water
Auto trans oil
Hydraulic oil
Anti freeze
Petrol

In that order? The only major prob is the water and anti-freeze? Petrol in smaller quantities is fine, gear oil mixed with the rest is that a major issue, or will it block the filters, i'm using 100,50 and 5 micron,?
The water and antifreeze will both settle out if left for about 4 weeks?
